A REASON TO STAY UP AT NIGHT

When I originally wrote this book ten years ago, it was anyone’s guess what calamity was going to effect us.  Little did I know that Peak Oil had just started and that Economic Depression was one year away from unfolding.  Dictatorship was well underway but had been for nearly a century-little has since transpired that is any different in that regard ( each President keeps getting worse, each Supreme Court ruling takes more freedom away-or at a minimum we take five steps back and then one forward.  Never enough to restore our freedoms, which you would think we know better to expect since this is an empire run by Banksters and other assorted East Coast Blue Blood asswhores ).  Climate change has gotten to be quite noticeable.  Nuclear War hasn’t happened, yet, but we have all been sucking in Fukishima radiation for a few years and can look forward to dying early of some cancer if we don’t end up in a cannibals stewpot first.  Luckily, he’ll be eating your cancerous flesh.

*

Whatever we were worried about ten years ago, whatever kept us up at night, has doubled down in intensity or mutated exponentially.  What fun it is to be us.

*

PEAK OIL

I was close enough on Peak Oil to escape any embarrassment, but I was way too optimistic in thinking any oil substitutions would be viable.  Since then, our country has tried ethanol which is great at replacing ten percent of our transportation gasoline ( not our diesel, though, which is a little more important for transporting food ) at higher cost with less energy delivered, and with that unintended consequence of an unstable Mexican border and a imploding middle east as we no longer send cheap grain to the overseas peasants.  Yes, it is a bit more complicated than that but that is the end result.  Then we tried fracking, which was just embarrassing and has already failed.

*

One thing I had not foreseen was the effects of Peak Oil and the Petrodollar.  Again simplifying, when foreign countries buy our Treasury Bonds, they are not, contrary to the normal bloviating, investing in America or investing in a safe financial instrument or seeking a safe harbor for their money.   Since the 1970’s, the world market for petroleum has priced their product in US Dollars.  If China wanted to buy oil from Saudi Arabia or Dubai it couldn’t use domestic currency.  It had to use American Dollars.  Yet, there not enough dollars in print to buy 70 million barrels of oil a day-so Treasury Bonds, government IOU’s, were used in trading.  So China sold us boatloads of plastic crap and used the payment to buy oil ( which powered machinery to secrete plastic made from oil ).  Since Peak Oil Ignition, one way to get oil cheaper, or to be the only one bidding on oil, or to be the only one with any money to get petroleum, is to bypass the Petrodollar.  Which many countries are trying to do.  In short, the day our dollar is no longer the global currency for energy, we immediately see a fifty percent drop in oil imports, if not a smidge more.

*

GLOBAL WARMING

Perhaps Al Gore was more wrong than usual and we aren’t seeing Warming.  Perhaps it is Global Weirding.  And it is probably man made but at this point that is besides the point ( as one of my loyal minions noted, when you are falling off a cliff it doesn’t matter if you tripped or were pushed ).  What matters is that we really can’t deny Gore Warming anymore.  The Gulf Stream, the conveyor of warm water that travels from the Caribbean up our East Coast to Europe and then back down, has broken.  And our weather is now New Normal weird as hell.  You have Alaskan winter temperatures higher than New York State, you have huge tidal surges WITHOUT a storm, etc.  If you haven’t been paying attention and have no idea what I’m talking about, I can’t imagine how you got this book.  All you Asparagus Farmers out there convinced a garden equals self reliance need to look out the window, see the new weather and stockpile the heck out of food.  Weather related crop failures will become the norm.

*

NATURAL DISASTERS

The least of your worries, unless you live at the bottom of a levee or on a fault line ( if the New Madrid Fault goes, this means in one of several states ).  Like Global Warming, these things are just getting worse and the response to them more feeble and pathetic as the money runs out.  If you prepare for worse, you should be able to weather the severe weather.

*

NUCLEAR WAR

This used to be the only worry survivalists had, not too surprisingly.  And just because the Soviet Union is now Russia doesn’t mean the threat is lessoned.  More folks have the bomb now.  And not just terrorists, because they would use one or two.  Nation states with MANY bombs are more of a worry.  Yet, I remain somewhat optimistic.  More than likely, nukes will be used at some point.  There are too many good reasons, once a certain level of desperation is reached, not to be utilized.  But the good news is we will see limited radiation exposure from a small war, rather than a planet ending Nuclear Winter from thousands of bombs blowing as was the concern decades ago.  In other words, a nuclear war is most likely but our danger will probably stay at the Chernobel/Fukishima level ( in all probability ).  No more danger than those fracking chemicals you’ve been drinking.

*

DICTATORSHIP

More of the same.  New Boss Same As The Old Boss.  Even under Reagan, my personal favorite for the only good President since I’ve been alive, because that poor senile bastard was most likely just a puppet for Bush Sr.  Obama, Hilary, Trump.  Who cares.  The Elites control the whole Kabuki Theatre.  We already live under a Soft Dictatorship.  Draw your line in the sand and prepare to fight back if needed.  I say, as long as they leave me alone, just demanding more taxes, whatever.  I’d rather the Leviation exhaust itself and implode without my help.

*

ECONOMIC DEPRESSION

Already there.  It is just a matter of time before you too lose your job and your mortgaged home.  It doesn’t really matter how valuable you are.  If your company goes bankrupt you could be The Savior Of The Universe and you would still get canned.  You can be self-employed and if all your customers lose their income they will watch as rain pours through their roof or what have you.  They will just jerry rig a near free solution.  Not that a years supply of food is the best answer to an economic collapse.  Having a off grid paid off shack is a far better solution.  But we are talking about a bare bones survival budget here.  At least you’ll eat even if homeless.  Food first, amenities after that.

  1. Meh, I put the food second to the paid for land- you need a place to store that food that wont be taken from you. Once you have the land, you get the rest of the food *obviously you can have enough food in your apartment to eat for the 1 - 2 months it takes them to evict you*.
Store the food in hidden pest resistant spots around your land, and begin building your dugout shack and improving your land to the best of your budget and sweat equity...

    1. I only put food first as the future is unknowable. Just in case it unravels ricky ticky.

    2. Most definitely agree with you Jim. Food is absolutely first !
Gonna be a whole lotta free property , soon after the people start dying off.

    3. A whole lotta guns-and no ammunition, also.

    4. Property is never 'free' cheap or costing only the bribe(s) to keep from being run off by the locals. But the government always claims title to land left vacant. Even if the government is just the local warlord.

    5. Well, free or cheap in relation to now, anyway.

    6. The problem is that you must have the land prior to the collapse in which to have a place to stash your food and preps, lest you wind up like the guy mentioned in the comments section a few posts back that had his cache discovered and destroyed.

    7. Well, if you cache food, don't also have a shelter to attract attention. I think we covered this in one of my books. I hear what you are saying, I'm just thinking we have to Emergency Prioritize right now.

    8. A shelter might be okay James as long as it's a crappy looking shack with nothing of value stored inside. Think Jed Clampett's original house prior to the oil discovery, or the Our Gang clubhouse. You can cache your goods, or if you're clever enough, maybe have some hidden rooms in the shack.

    9. Sorry, we were talking about the shelter found on FedGov land.

    10. I see. Well then you certainly wouldn't want to construct a shelter in that case. You might find a remote abandoned shack, or a cave, but you wouldn't have any guarantees on it being vacant when you arrived. I'd go with a backpack tent. Still have a few different cache sites. If you're lucky, you might have time to leave on a pack horse or ATV with some decent supplies from your home base, which should be close to the mountains that you plan on retreating to.

Still better to have junk land ahead of time, the above advice is only for those that don't.

    11. You could underground cache a shovel, pick and saw and build on arrival. Not a great plan for wintertime but a better long term plan than a tent.

  2. Thanks for posting that article James. One section is kind of vague here:

“she would boil 2 cups of water to which she added 1 cup”.

If he's talking about all water, why not mention that it takes 3 cups? Maybe he means that after boiling it down a little, that she then added another cup? But he doesn't say this?

Then there's this from the same thread:

“The old "grandma" thing has been published a number of times. Looks good on paper but some of it is utter nonsense.”

I guess you would have to try it to really know? I think that it's probably best to just stock it and hope that you never run out. If you do, look to lower tech weapons systems such as archery. I'll admit that such processes are intimidating to me, as well as tedious, and I don't see it happening for myself.
