FLEAS BILLIONS
*
note: if you haven't seen this before, rare photos of my two pit projects ( the photos are towards the end of the article ).  Keep in mind if you read the comments, after I took the pics I enlarged the dirt steps so that now I have a rain sump and I get natural air flow from the floor up through the other end ceiling vent so there is ZERO moisture build up.

*
Every once in awhile I come across the old federal fiasco of the billion rounds of 40 cal pistol stockpiled, seemingly to enable our overlords to suppress any inclination of revolt and Obama will maybe do…something.  Another Red Line In The Sand?  The kind of not well hidden reason was FEMA was stockpiling for the New Madrid earthquake ( sure, that’s a “thing”, but probably on par with Yellowstone showing dangerous signs of imminent eruption -for three years now ), with a butt ton of MRE’s and the aforementioned ammunition.  Didn’t we just get all worked up when the Feds had a military exercise in Texas, something like that?  Hey, I’ve been on military exercises, the ones supposedly there to convince the North Koreans and Soviets that we were Billy Bad-asses and not to be trifled with and the only reason they would be awed would be if their exercises were MORE shallow, pretentious and a travesty, making the pre-ordained victory in  war gamming of the Japanese Pacific war look professional.  You think our military is so dangerous, why haven’t we won a war the last half century?

*

I’m rarely ever overly impressed about the federals magical powers, or for that matter the supposed abilities of their OpFors, the militia porn kings.  You want Keystone Kops or the Three Stooges, there you go.  At the time, I was guessing that the ammo stockpile was probably, at most, all the fat weather forecasters, paper pushing supervisors, clerks and HR department personnel merely being armed in case their building got invaded in a riot or something similar.  Rather than pay a cop poser to secure each building, send some balding idiot with pretensions to a few classes, give him a pistol he has to keep locked up, and call it a good day in The War On Terror.  And why not?  The front line troops, the federal law enforcement boys ( FLEA-federal law enforcement agency ), were going back to 9mm, probably because letting all the females and fags into the agencies you didn’t want a pistol round that actually, you know, recoiled, so they went back to the round they knew and loved.  But why waste all those 40 cal pistols?

*

( recoil, another perfectly good PC reason to stay with the M16, because while biology is forbidden, we can still use technology to nullify its actual effects.  Speaking of the Poodle Shooter, you want to use the standard rifle for cost and spare parts reasons-even if the round is weak and anemic-and use it as mid range sniper single shot?  This way eliminates fouling and wear and tear.  Remove the gas tube and block off the vent on the gas block, probably with epoxy and screw or similar.  Pour in molten lead?  It should be easy to hack-and won’t cost $200 for the only Adjustable Gas Block that you can use reliably without breaking it-most are meant for a one time set and forget-and now you have a straight pull bolt for sniping.  Have your AR without needing many magazines or extra ammo.  Now, I understand that right about now you semi simians are grasping for breath and in danger of releasing that blood clot into your brain, but if you think about it for a second, if you are using that little thing on the top called sites and actually aim, you don’t need to employ a shotgun approach to shooting.  And even at a hundred yards, who doesn’t have time to reload manually?  Just ponder it ).

*

I don’t know if I was correct in my assumption that support personnel with the Federales were getting surplus weapons to lend a hand in any coming revolt.  It seems likely they could help pull security duties in an emergency, but surely not to actually get out on to the street and shoot at dissidents.  Hell, any Black hoodlum is more of a match for a ATF SWAT bitch ( I would use the example of the Dallas or Houston-one of those big Texas cities- LEO massacre just past but a little voice keeps telling me that could have been a False Flag Attack ) than any militia fantasyland keyboard warrior, and there are a lot of them, so armed office workers wouldn’t stand much of a chance.  Hell, even White redneck crack heads wouldn’t be very effective, but they also have the numbers and more importantly the substance that makes them at least temporary fearless Mau-Mau’s.  The cubicle office reserves would be as effective as Polish cavalry.  Of course, it makes more sense than the reason why ammo prices went through the roof.

*

As I’ve said before, we went through years of fighting in the Sandbox using plenty of ammunition and I was still buying rimfire ammo-oh, that prodigious waster of brass and lead-for two and a half cents a round in bulk, and in case you kind of missed my whole wrath on carbine submachine gun ammunition wasting military tactics not to be emulated by survivalists, they go through a butt ton of ammo over there ( I simply love all these military historians living in our current Age Of Plenty, looking back at the Army’s refusal to adapt guns that “wasted” ammo as ludicrous, when resources and logistics prior to our Oil Age were indeed scarce and expensive-short sighted sumbitches, like all those Fracking Fags who think Willpower And Education actually create resources ).  The Iraq and Afghanistan War didn’t cause ammo shortages, but a FLEA purchase does?  Illogical.  Copper shortages, now THAT is a far better explanation.  Even though we can’t admit Peak Oil or Peak Copper because that would mean the whole semi-auto tactical paradigm is in danger, not to mention our well paying city jobs, our McMansions and the perennial favorite SUV.

*

Then, after everyone is done being busy getting all excited that every lone federal worker from the Forrest Service to the Food Stamp administrators is going to arm themselves and join the jackbooted Brown Shirts taking away our AR’s, then they turn around and start babbling about how all the Oath Keepers won’t fire onto their fellow citizens since it is, you know, un-Constitutional and what not and such.  Now, let me just skim the surface of my dysfunctional memory here and take only the more well know examples countering this bullspunk.  The War Of Northern Aggression.  Indian genocide.  Burning and shooting the unarmed peaceful War Bonus marchers during the Great Depression by such charming Army leaders as Macarthur and Patton.  Kent State.  Machinegunning Union workers on strike.  The War On Drugs.  I could go on, but I trust my point has been made.  No one Needs No Stinking Constitution, and shooting your fellow countrymen has a long and proud tradition.  So, all these “reporters” and their blogs and their “analysis”, where do they get their facts?  Out of their ass?

*

I’m certainly not calling for accuracy as a benchmark.  When you are stuck in a sea of propaganda,  no real news NOT being controlled or suppressed, all you can do is read the official lies and guess at what is between the lines.  And that is going to generate a lot of mistaken analysis.  What I disapprove of is this analysis being conducted by frightened little girls, all emotional and easily upset, ignoring logic in favor of fear and loathing.  Sweet Baby Jesus On A Pogo Stick, are we that emasculated and feminized already, that we can’t logically sort out issues and dangers?  And no, Nancy ( “Scrubs” reference ), I’m not saying emotionalism in females is a bad thing.  I’m saying emotional men are problematic unless the ONE emotion is anger.  We don’t have to have all the answers, certainly not if those answers are mere hysterical reactions rather than thoughtful conjectures.  Why do you think I don’t concern myself with partisan politics?  Because it isn’t even a real issue, it is just a emotional button we keep allowing to get pushed ( we have one party here in this country, the Imperial Party, and voting won’t change that ).

*

I certainly don’t mind discussing Click Bait Poser Prepper article ideas.  It gives one something to do.  You don’t even need to be reading me more than about once a week, past its entertainment value.  If I just condensed down to bullet points, it would save us all a lot of time.  So really, us showing up every day is more along the lines of tribal identity reinforcement.  We want to know there are others like us out there, those that refuse to be panicked into shopping for expensive prepper items unnecessary or even detrimental, herded in panic.  Mavericks in mayhem.  Ignoring ignorance.  And every day does bring SOME value, if only reinforcement to stay the course in frugality.  But you would also do well to stay clear of the worst offending “news” sources that only strive to get you wound up and worried over the wrong issues.  Like Federal Invincibility, Militia Functionality or similar fantasies.  Those that misdirect, as the LEAST of their sins.

elite racists

ELITE RACISTS

Are the Elites that control societies levels on the macro level ( not the Micro, they have minions for that and they don’t even do that great of a job at it ) racist?  No, they hate everyone not of their own class.  They are skin colorblind, except for Green.  Do they encourage racism?  Duh, of course they do.  Divide and conquer, bitches!  Just look at your very favoritist mostest wonderfulness Idaho Yuppie Scum Survivalist Guru.  He goes out of his way to make sure you know he isn’t racist, which is for a very good reason ( covered below ) and most likely true.  Hell, he was an Officer in the military, and they vet their candidates very closely to make sure they have indeed drank the grape flavored Kool-Aid.  Look at his strategy and tactics-pure Yankee Industrialized Mechanized Petroleum Warfare.  They are not allowed to be racists, our Officers And Gentlemen.  They can be Class Pigs of course ( Orwell Animal Farm pigs ), and they had better be, since our elites, rulers, supervisors and minions know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are FAR better than the proletariat masses-how else to use them as cannon fodder?  Hating those you kill is the oldest tribal trick in the book.

*

Classists hate you for being poor.  The poor, on the other hand, generally don’t hate the rich for being wealthy as they see the evolutionary dead ends for what they are and want in no way to emulate them, but do hate them for trying to trick, cheat, kill or destroy the poor for extra profit.  What, you slurp down your testicle shrinking radiation laced soy and GMO Frankenfood and don’t hate the humper that sold it to you?  You think he is just a Champion Of The Free Market?  Wow.  Okay, whatever, dude.  Denial is more than a river.  You don’t think Yuppie Scum survival advice won’t get you killed?  It would be better if our survival gurus WERE racists ( I’m not trying to disparage Kurt Saxon here, and I could be WAYYY off mark, but it seems he was a bit leaning towards the right wing militant racist tent from what I’ve imagined I remember.  I could be wrong, so don’t quote me on that.  My point is, if true, you get better advice from racists than class pigs.  Me, I’m just xenophobic.  Race is a mind hump they try to draw you into and while I’m glad I no longer live alongside our darker brethren for reasons of personal safety, I don’t hate them but merely fear them.  That is xenophobia as a protection device, despite the fervent cries of protest from the Left as they imagine you shouldn’t notice skin color or religion, even as you are being killed by them ).

*

I was really into guns as a teenager, and accidentally encountered survivalism because of them, plus a buddy had a cop acquaintance who was into the prepper practice, but I came a little late to the game ( 1979 or 80 ) to pick up on all the old ’60’s and early ’70’s racist elements in survivalism ( Covenant, the Sword and the Arm of the Lord, CSA-if I was aware of the news reports on them at the time, I’m sure I ignored the Supremacist label and just focused on their cool tactical gear, so it was hyper focus rather than lack of news that formed this blinder ), so I only now am aware of the need for others to protest to being thought a racist in our field.  Not that you can really blame the folks at the time.  The Black riots and violent political protests, Black Panthers and Malcolm X, did nothing to convince any Cracker of means that it was a bad idea to leave the urban areas.  On that score, nothing has changed.  Except, now those of our own race has sold out all of their own for profit, haven’t they?  Oh, stay in the city next to those I’m not racist against, and keep working as a corporate clone, to afford the necessary prepper equipment.  Honest Injun, if you conceal carry nothing bad can happen to you.  Humpers.

*

Another aspect of pushing the Social Warrior message of Sameness is the situation in Africa.  Africa has been a mess forever, starting-at least for our purposes here-with their own kind kidnapping Interior Blacks to sell to the Whites waiting at the Slave Trade ports to fill up their ships ( financed by Yankees ).  If a place is going to get screwed by drought, Africa comes first.  If a religious war starts, it starts in Africa with the underlying famines as the fuel.  If you want multi-generational warfare, go to the Congo or similar area.  Africa is a craphole.  It is also our future.  But we can safely ignore that, because of the propaganda.  The SJW’s scream out in shrill anger, hatred and discontent fed by the unsatisfaction of Lesbian love, how we are not allowed to see skin color, so we do the exact opposite and look around for differences by skin, and notice Africa is filled with, well, a lot of Blacks.  Africa, failed states, warfare and conflict, full of Blacks, so Blacks are inferior.  I’m NOT saying I believe that-for Christ’s sake, lighten up.  I’m saying there is a subconscious connection.

*

So, when you think, Detroit, or Newark, or Watts, full of Blacks, they are unable to help themselves to looting and stealing, uncivilized, not Westernized in culture, refusal to integrate, all the stereotypical thought process, you go back to making the connection that Africa is Detroit.  The collapse can’t be due to resources, right?  It is the fault of the Blacks.  Again, I’m not agreeing ( Jesus, I wish we could have a rational discussion of race and gender without needing to quantify everything ), I’m saying this is the subconscious thought process.  They are inferior and will hump things up anywhere.  So you automatically discount the prime example of resource collapse, making excuses such as political incompetence or worse.  Africa is where overpopulation met resource contraction, decades ago, yet the same old excuses get pulled out to ignore that.  So not only does the racist label hinder survivalism ( well, it doesn’t hinder it as much as redirects it to a safe consumerist niche ) as a movement, it redirects everyone’s attention away from the real dangers, including most survivalists.  You don’t have to believe the PC Princesses, and in fact it is better if you don’t, for this to work wonderfully.

*

Feminism and racism, through the very act of promoting their Thought Crime status, and hence pushing us to feel the exact opposite since it goes against our biology otherwise, helps us forget globalization and overpopulation.  Blame Feminism or Racism ( hiring quotas etc ) on losing your job, not the fact the elite sent the factories overseas ( time to pull out a statistic “proving” we still have plenty of factories, even if they are automated, you globalist apologist masquerading as a Free Market proponent ) and allowed unrestricted immigration.  You can’t be against immigration anyway as that is racist.  Even if you know better, the constant redirect towards Others takes your focus off the Elites.  We are so busy hating all those we aren’t allowed to hate we don’t focus on the true criminals.  You know, those you can’t help but work for so you can buy all those Pretty Pony Prepper Party Supplies.  We can’t even have a logical discussion on racism to discuss all its aspects harming us, not even amongst ourselves, the Justice Warriors Of America pretty much everywhere.  Go to ANY prepper site, ANY, and tell me they aren’t 100% Politically Correct.  They direct you to Venezuela, pretend it is socialism that caused the collapse there, and completely ignore Africa as a Collapse Lesson.  Hell, they writes books pretending you can Yuppie Scum Prep an entire country into being there, a perfect proverbial shopping list of Nothing But The Best/Most Expensive equipage of a nation state ever conceived.  I wanted to pour acid in my eyes after trying to read that turd.

*

As an Elite, what isn’t to like about racism?  All your debt serfs finance a protective force moat around you, by willingly paying more taxes for better police for themselves, to avoid the ghetto’s ( want to bet that the destruction of public transportation was not objected to at the time, as a means to keep Others away from the suburbs?  Kunstler, please note-White Boys protected themselves by segregating and your befouled motor vehicles helped him do that.  Or are you too much of a Yankee Apologists to see the possibility?  ).  As an Elite, all your workers are busy hating your Equalitized females or your Non-Merit hired Blacks or the No-Document Required Illegal immigrant workers around them, rather than you.  If you argue against the Black or immigrant you are considered racist.  Against the female you are a misogynist.  By pushing PC, the Quisling masses betray their class and race and endanger everyone ( note, if you possibly can, have a Black in your tribe.  That way, it will be highly amusing when they are the ones to string up the PC Warriors during the revolution against the Elite.  Sorry, bitches, you asked to be put on the Lamp Post List ).

*

Racism, just another tool in the box conquering the masses.

ass talking

ASS TALKING
*
note: The newest Living Amongst The Dead book is out.  http://amzn.to/2iw5JA2
It starts out slow, so stick with it, but then gets going and ends up kicking ass.  I got his first one on Kindle Unlimited and have bought all his books since, I'm so happy with his skills as a natural born writer.  You might not agree, we all like different things, but if you've sampled his stuff already and appreciate it, rush down and buy this one.
*
note: September 7th thus starts the Netflix Walking Dead new season.
*
Don’t get me wrong, I’m happier than a sixty year old politician in an orgy at the implant clinic that Hilary didn’t win the election.  No politician is any more powerful than the Elite allow ( they know better after Kennedy, even for someone as retarded as Obammy-all those Negro quota diploma’s didn’t learn him nothing-he understands not to displease his masters, a quaking dog staying off the porch ), but unless they disabled The Football and replaced it with an amusing Speak & Spell while nobody was looking, some batcrap crazy ass psycho bitch like Hallucinating Hilary could get into office and not be seduced by interns, dazzled by speaking fees for ghostwritten books or be at all worried about assassination since they are dying of a brain tumor anyway ( was that how her first carpet licking buddy Janet went?  I can’t remember ), and then we are all even more humped that usual, aren’t we?  Yet as the last cheers die from sore throats and the last confetti is swept away, except on college campuses where the color of your skin or the lack of dangling genitalia alone qualify you for high office, as happy as we all are It Was Anyone But Hilary, you have to admit Trump is dumber than a box of rocks.

*

A year ago he was talking about the stock market being in a bubble but now is taking credit for a great economy, as proven by the even higher stock market.  Only an idiot would associate himself with that floating turd someone sprinkled sparkles on.  Then, after some noise about how our nuclear arsenal ( you know, that thing that replaces our dysfunctional military as a deterrent ) being allowed to go far too long without maintenance which might make most of it nonfunctional, he has his Tweeter Aid send off a message that he upgraded the entire nuclear arsenal this last six months.  After all he did was demand a report on its condition which isn’t even done yet.  And only Sweet Baby Jesus On A Big Wheel alone knows what other peals of idiocy dropped out of his ass while I was vainly trying to not pay too much attention.  Now, Trump could just be another in a long line of Bozo’s pretending to steer the USS Titanic, or he could be playing the fool as he vacuums up all the spare change left over from the bankers looting, the Presidency his last post-bankruptcy get rich quick scheme ( “Against HILARY?  How could I loose?  We can do this cheap on a one year loan from Vinnie” ).  It doesn’t matter.

*

The important part isn’t even that Trump will do NOTHING.  If he is an idiot, he can’t fix anything and if he is a crook he won’t do anything to divert his attention from Getting Paid.  No, the takeaway here is just this.  They are all idiots, not because of education or mental capacity but simply because they have no friggin idea that all their solutions to problems can’t work since they are looking through the wrong lens.  And me and you, we would be idiots for paying them much mind.  But we would also be idiots if we looked through the same reality construct that they are.  Which we frequently do.  It isn’t necessarily their fault or our fault, as that was the reality from Day One of suckling at our mommas teat.  That was the world we grew up in.  After five hundred years, twenty plus generations, reality is as reality does was no longer about experiencing, testing and observing reality but simply accepting it as what it once was.  I don’t know that any generation is ever all that different, once the grandparents who were boots on the ground to a different age died off.  I’m getting old, but I still make fun of old people, yet at least they sometimes serve the purpose of keeping paranoia alive ( today they are so focused on golf they might as well be the Presidential Recreational Committee ).

*

You don’t have to be smart to see a different reality from the common perception, you just have to be cynical, hateful, mistrusting and dissatisfied with official lines.  Hell, if it took smarts to look into this crystal ball, you wouldn’t be reading anything from me right now.  All I know is they always lie and they hate me, and then it is easy to figure out the rest.  Yes, I take the collapse personally.  Look at five years ago, give or take a football season ( if you are a sports fan, which I emphatically am NOT, preferring the reading part of the Circus in Bread And Circuses, you can look back a few years and see how incredibly dysfunctional even sports have become, as further proof of systematic collapse ), at the couple of years prior and our weather scare.  We had a drought lasting more than one season, globally, and since the last twenty years we have seen emergency stockpiles of grain get used up to make up for production shortfalls ( not to mention the outright triage of calories to a lot of areas-hello?  War, anyone? ), a drought in ALL the grain producing regions was a pretty big Gott Damn deal.

*

Did we learn anything from that?  No.  We only learned that the can keeps getting kicked down the road.  Every swinging cheese dingus out there, everyone reading this, should have been paying attention to that event.  Food Is First!  Not AR arsenals or FLIR scopes.  What, you think a FLIR scope used to go hunt a squirrel yielding 200 calories is the best way to spend two grand?  Two hundred THOUSAND calories of wheat cost $40, even at the increased price after we just lost a big chunk of one regions yield after a freeze ( did you panic about that?  Not because that in itself is reason to worry.  But because it is part of that twenty year trend, where the population and resource line cross over on the graph ).  For the price of one AR you could buy a shotgun and almost a ton of wheat ( before containers ).  You need four hundred pounds for a years bare bones Better Than Nothing, Keep You Alive For Hunting Or Gardening Or Fighting minimum diet food stash.  Four years food and a shotgun, or a Pretty Pony Plastic Poodle Perforator.  Why does the AR always win out?  Not because you are stupid.  I’d wager, from the occupations of almost all of my loyal minions, almost every single one of you is smarter than I am.  Because you listen to the propaganda, the non-stop background noise, and stop thinking once you’ve subliminally heard “the can was kicked down the road”.  You are not retarded, you just aren’t paranoid enough.

*

It doesn’t matter that we look at Trump and think, what a humping retread.  We listen to his message and obviously discount it, but then we get sidetracked by another Noisy Signal ( one most folks seem to be buying into is The Immanent Muslim Invasion Meme, or reading my far less enlightened fellow blog authors, North Korea EMP Attack Minutes Away ) which also burrows into our subconscious to stage an attack from the other flank.  On the one hand you get “discount idiots” and on the other you get “all the boys are crying wolf” and what emerges in your subconscious is “Cassandra’s Are Idiots”.  So you keep acting the Good Consumer, buying AR’s and FLIR’s and don’t have years and years worth of food ( perhaps months and months ).  The AR’s are used frequently at the range, and you need ammo and mags and AR Accessories which keeps you working and consuming.

*

You don’t even realize it and you are part of the flock of prepper sheep, long ago corralled and made passive by the establishment, reduced to a sub-niche consumer group used as a profit center ( zombie books, $100 buckets of instant soup and oatmeal costing $7.54 total for the manufacture ), yet with visions of militia ninja’s bravely fighting those who profit off of you.  Go give them another good quarterly profit ( he sarcastically writes as he trolls for monthly donations to support this publication ).  Again, this isn’t a matter of anyone lacking intelligence or common sense, but just a reflection on how we are controlled and programmed.  It takes constant diligence and effort to work around that, and most of us simply can’t do that and raise a family and work for a living.  Which is why I believe it is important to distill this down to cheap essentials, one time insurance investments.  If I can just get you worried enough for a short enough period of time, a one time hyper-focus, one off event, you can use their consumerist paradigm to your long term advantage and then go back to living life as usual, reading this for entertainment or the occasional reminder of needed tweaks to the system.  You don’t need to STAY paranoid, that is my job.  You just need to fight against their system for a short time.

offgrid day 2 of 2

OFFGRID DAY 2
*
note: SF, got your PayPal donation.  You're too cool for school, thank you.
*
Before we continue on from arriving home from work with the days water supply, I’ll cover the weekends when I didn’t cook or get coffee at my place of employ, or pick up a package of meat at the market on my way home.  For breakfast, at first I started cooking wheat with propane.  Biscuits, pancakes and similar.  A cast iron skillet cook.  Well, it didn’t take long to discover-wow, surprise-I was sucking down propane like it was water in an oasis.  This simply would not do.  I was on a very strict budget.  In my case, working at the food bank, I had all the whole wheat factory bread I wanted ( most folks except old humpers with obstructed bowels wanted white bread-so most times the WW stayed there to mold and then go to the chicken or pig guy ) and I usually made grilled toast.  Regular toast with propane, that little camp contraption that sets the bread in a pyramid, doesn’t work well at all.  At least on whole wheat.  I buttered the bread and laid it in the skillet and cooked it on one side until golden and THAT, my fine feathered minions, is a breakfast fit for the gods.  I never tired of eating that ( well, especially compared to nuke bread ).

*

Now, if I was doing it again, no way would I buy $3 or $4 a loaf bread from the store, except as an occasional treat when I got too tired of flatbread.  I would go back to making actual flatbread on a propane skillet once a week ( think that weird Indian-dot not feather-bread with the burn spots all over it, but many times better tasting ) and the rest solar oven flatbread ( for breakfast and lunch ).  The solar oven is on my project list-I have enough galvanized sheet metal for the reflectors ( I need to see if that is reflective enough.  Aluminum sheets are way more expensive so I’m trying cheap first ) but need more for the interior box, and then just a few more pieces of lumber and some black paint.  I’m still on the fence as to whether I’ll go with the microwave or not.  It might only be one more panel, but once batteries are no longer replaceable it will be useless unless I go all in on the direct-from-panel power.  I’m not sure if a thousand bucks is a good investment.  I don’t want an Edison battery for the same price, since One Is None.  I’ll also be installing a rocket stove to curtail propane use, there being plenty of dead sagebrush on adjoining vacant properties.

*

For coffee I used a camp percolator in the winter, which went a long way warming up the place.  The trailer was solar heat in the winter and the B-POD stayed warm enough ( with wool sweaters, socks and in the dead of winter, a beanie ) just from coffee and cooking.  In the summer I used a French Press to minimize the heating ( I should have installed a propane stove upstairs also, but everything stayed austere budget after child support ended, both because of the now ex’s hospital bills and because I was going all out on preps after ten years of bare minimum prepping deprivation ).  Now that I’m full on gay over Cowboy Coffee ( right up there with the queer Cowboy Poetry bullspit these Yuppie asswhores have fostered on to our poor embarrassed town ) it might be a bit harder to use the coffee making for secondary space heat, unless I just make an extra large pot and keep it under a very low heat ( a smaller pot just boils away as you can only turn the flame down so far.  Of course, this assumes propane.  Rocket stove use will deliver a lot more initial heat ) and then use that leftover the next day.

*

Okay, let’s double back to the end of work after you’ve loaded up your water jugs.  Time to stop by the market for that nights meat.  This really sucks.  Single packs never give you any savings and your choices are always limited.  At one point as chicken and beef prices went through the roof I was stuck with pork every night.  The tough cut, too, with little flavor.  It got to the point I almost didn’t want to eat dinner anymore, and that is or at least was my huge meal of the day to fuel up after work and an hour and a half of bike riding.  Finally what I ended up doing after a couple of years was using the walk in freezer at work, a spot so high up the short boss never used it.  In the future I’ll be getting a solar refrigerator, keeping raw meat in there a couple of days, then cooking it and keeping it another couple, so that I can get away from buying single cuts and buy family packs a couple times a week ( I leave the canning issue aside for now ).  If you look at it just from the point of those savings, family pack verses single pound package, you are saving fifty percent or more on meat.  Since I’m cheap, I’ll call that $1.50 a pound verses $3 a pound.  And that savings alone pays for your solar fridge in slightly less than a year.

*

As it was, I had been spending $15 a week on fresh meat and another $2 or $4 on canned meat for the weekend ( all of which suck.  I haven’t even thought of eating tuna or chili for years now ) for the two of us.  That same amount now feeds me almost three times as long, with a freezer.  I should be able to duplicate that on a weekly basis with a fridge.  If you can’t afford the fridge, you can always just haul meat home as needed, and eat a lot of cheese and eggs or even beans.  Just remember, if you buy refrigerated eggs they need to stay refrigerated.  If you get fresh, they can stay room temperature.  I was using the “eggs underwater” trick for keeping eggs a couple of weeks and I was always getting an upset stomach from them.  Now I know why, since I was getting them from the store and they should have stayed in a fridge.  For a short time there was cooked hamburger in a foil pack but nobody sells that anymore.  You are stuck with canned fish, chili, Spam and other horror meats.  Yes, I know a lot of you like Spam, and that makes you…lucky?  Anyway, no fridge or freezer sucks as far as meat goes, unless you can yourself.

*

Once I got home it was time to bath.  I alternated nights between shaving and bathing, and you gals can alternate between washing your hair and bathing.  Most of the year I could use my solar hot water heater to bath with.  This was an insulated box buried in the dirt slanted at an angle towards the sun, cover in a sheet of glass and with a flat black painted sheet of metal on the bottom.  I had four Mason jars capped off with spaghetti sauce lids ( you can use the one piece lids they sell in plastic ), propped up off the bottom with two by fours to get full sun exposure, each with eight ounces of water in them ( when resting at an angle they can’t be too full ).  That was my hot water, retrieved with an oven mitt and carried in a wire basket to the home.  Simple and almost free.  No soldering, copper pipes or etcetera.  Sometimes they barely warmed and I finished heating the water on the propane stove.  Other times they were too hot.  I added cold water as needed, or propane heated water as needed, one quarter gallon total for shaving and one half gallon for bathing.

*

There are many ways to hand bathe and I think I’ve tried most.  I tried the floppy solar shower bag, the bleach jug and the garden weed sprayer pressure thing, and none work as good as a simple whores bath.  Don’t use a wash clothe, use a small thick hand towel.  Start at your head and work your way down, skipping the pits, butt and crotch.  With a sodden but not excessive dripping cloth, wet and scrub all.  Usually unless you are really greasy you just need water scrubbed skin everywhere except the head, pits, crotch and butt which need soap.  Less soap and less than daily bathing is better for your skin anyway, and skipping a day will not see you stinking or unsanitary.  Just don’t skip more than that one day.  Scrub all, then go back to the pits, then the crotch and last the butt.  One half gallon is more than enough and you are refreshingly clean.  The other gravity fed water delivery systems just roll down your skin, and use more water.  The scrubbing method works much better and conserves water.  You are also conserving razor blades ( if you must be clean shaven for work, use an electric razor there prior to punching in ).

*

We already talked about diner, so we skip to washing dishes.  The lazy way is to soak everything.  The water conservative way is to use a cooking dish and then immediately wash it with a cup or two of hot water.  Use a vegetable scrub brush to remove food ( food catches in cloth or scrub pads, not so much in that one ).  If you must soak it, place that minor amount of water on the bottom and keep coming back to scrub, especially the sides not underwater.  Don’t give it a chance to dry and cake on.  Plates, cups and flatware are washed in a plastic tub or small sink with the same cup or two of hot water with soap, immediately so it doesn’t set.  Use a very minimal amount of soap.  Even one drop per plate, dipping into the hot water and scrubbing, dripping back down where the other dishes lay.  Use that cola bottle to squeeze water to rinse.  Done correctly, dishes take almost no water.

*

Okay, now it is nighttime, so we concern ourselves with electricity.  Solar is easier than ever.  If you can replace a wire under the hood of a car, you can set up a solar system.  One panel, one charge controller and one battery will provide you with your lighting and even TV for the night.  $250, bulbs and wires included.  Any other appliances such as the microwave or fridge get their own system ( there is a reason for not sharing panels or batteries or controllers. One goes out, there is your replacement you can cannibalize.  And while parts last five to eight years, something is always going out at the worst time ).  From your panel, run a positive (+) wire and a negative (-) wire from the panel wire down to your battery.  If you keep it from freezing it will last much longer, so I bury mine.  The holes for wires vent the charging gases, which is why batteries can come inside, but not charge inside.  Right alongside the battery, the panel wires connect to the charge controller ( this stuff is easy, + to +, - to - ), and the controller wires to the battery.  Now, separate wires with that O end connector, the O connecters on the same wing nut battery stud as the controller connection, lead back into your dwelling.  To the light fixture ( RV store or auto parts store, you are using a bayonet bulb LED ) or to a cigarette lighter plug in for 12v appliance ( they sell 12v TV’s, mainly to semi-truck drivers ).  The cigarette plugs always come with a glass fuse.  Have plenty on hand.  You can also wire to an inverter to use regular 110 AC power.

*

Note that your factory rated panel of 100 watts usually produces less than 100 watts, even on a bright shiny day.  Usually 15% less.  Charging your battery eats another 10% or so, and using an inverter kills another 10%.  This is why I generally overproduce and under consume.  Just try to do the same.  Don’t try to max out your use or the battery won’t last as long.  I use a simple Wal-Mart RV & Marine battery.  The least efficient but the easiest to replace on my budget.  Above ground I get two to three years daily use, buried I get about five years.  Charge controllers last seven or eight years, LED bulbs and panels nearly forever ( at least my lifetime ).  Your battery has a cold crank rating.  Usually 600 or so watts.  A good rule of thumb is that is the amount of watts you can use before your battery is drained half way.  Try not to go below that level, to maximize battery life.  LED bulbs are usually five watts, and a small TV about 12 watts.  I could run my light for six hours a night and my TV for two, and I’d use about 55 watts total.  Which is almost what my panels were ( don’t worry about subtracting the 15% and the 10% for this calculation ).  Even with a week of snow or rain clouds I never had an issue with my batteries not being charged the next sunny day after several hours.  Under use, over produce.

*

In the evening, or even early morning, the middle of winter, sometimes cooking didn’t heat enough.  I used to use Mr. Buddy heaters but they went south on quality as the prices rose.  And hardly anyone sells small BTU ( 4k or so ) indoor propane heaters.  Now I just take an ungreased cast iron skillet and put it on my cook stove under low heat to bathe or take the chill off.  Use the cast iron propane stove they sell at Sportsman’s Guide, which is the same cost as the crappy soon to break Wal-Mart sheet metal camp stove.  You want the new propane stove that use the small hose with built in regulator on the hose, not the ones that use the bigger disposable tanks or their adaptors.  The camp stoves with built in gas pressure regulator are built to break 90% quicker than they used to.  Once settled for the night, you don’t need heat.  Under the sheet, place a squishy foam pad.  That reflects heat.  On top of the sheet, wool blankets.  Never buy a blanket under three pounds or under 70% wool content or it will be nearly useless.

*

On top of the blanket(s) put a feather comforter ( synthetic feather works just fine ).  Don’t neglect a duvet cover.  In time your white comforter turns grey and is embarrassing.  Using the above, I’ve slept comfortably in eight degrees ( the outside was eight below ).  Sometimes you need to sleep in a T-shirt, or if in a trailer rather than underground you need a synthetic comforter between the wool and the down comforter, but other than that you stay toasty warm.  To wrap up, a new odds and ends.  You can just use disposable battery powered lamps, lanterns, stick up pucks and the like, not even needing a large 12v solar panel ( just a small unit to charge the AA and AAA batteries ) as long as the lumens ratings are good.  LED’s have gotten much brighter using less power in the last five years.  The toilet is easy, just a sawdust in the bucket to cover solid waste ( the urine bucket is separate ), then moved to a solar heated underground composter.  For laundry, the towns Laundromat is your friend.   You need to go shopping or to work anyway.  I had a large gym bag with strap I hauled mine in on my back, the bike baskets full of water.  Since time slows to nothing in a Laundromat, defying the laws of physics,  eventually I couldn’t stand it anymore and stopped using their dryers ( my work slacks kept shrinking in the length, also.  Dryers kill clothes.  Boycott dryers! ) and just strung a clothesline.  In the winter, I brought them in at night if not dry, hanging them from every nonporous surface and repeated the next day.

*

Sweet Baby Jesus in a Yugo, that is more than enough for today.  I’m sure I covered it all.  Frugal off grid living, oh my.

offgrid day 1 of 2

OFFGRID DAY

Five years ago I wrote a series of articles on how I lived off grid, started at waking up in the morning and ending in the evening.  In this way I covered all the little nagging questions how one lives without running water or light switches or what not.  Now, at the time I was still living upstairs in the travel trailer.  The B-POD was dug but not built, and I was still living on the then very expensive fifty watts of solar panels I had saved up for-on sale no less-which included one I had been gifted ( he had an off grid vacation home and the panel was draining his battery every night as he either never had a controller or it broke, or he just never used power.  I asked him if he replaced the controller but he just didn’t seem interested in the issue, so I took the panel off his hands in good consciousness.  A really old Japanese unit, still going strong ).  This was also prior to more research on solar refrigerators or composters, so I was living pretty darn frugally and primitively.  LED’s have also advanced in power quite a bit since then.

*

$300 for 45 watts of panels, and one of the three panels crapped out on me in the first year or so, leaving thirty watts ( the other two are still going strong seven years later.  They were the type you still see at Harbor Freight, the heavy glass covered ones ).  Now you can get lightweight monocyrstaline panels, which work better under low light conditions, for $1 a watt.  I said it then, and multiple times since then, get your panels now as you never know when the prices go back up from importation issues ( like your Commie rifles and ammo ).  I have 380 watts in reserve, still in boxes.  For what, I’m not sure, but I know I’ll use them for something.  If panels start increasing in price I’ll buy even more.  Since the panels should last a minimum of thirty years, way past my lifespan, I could always run microwaves directly off panels after all 12v batteries have failed ( if I got more, obviously ).  Anyway, just let that be words to the wise.  Sure, you get more power per dollar out of windmills, but they also have moving parts to break.  Solar is your only real power after the collapse ( which could also lay flat to collect power as they hide from recon ).

*

Okay, we begin with the alarm clock which is battery powered.  A  “AA” battery keeps a digital travel alarm clock running for months.  Using the alarm five days a week I’d change it once a month prior to it running down.  You can still get batteries from Amazon for twenty-five cents each for disposables.  Don’t buy at Dollar Tree or Family Dollar as while they used to be decent now they are pretty much crap.  You can of course go strictly with rechargeable but some batteries such as my bicycle flashers last the whole winter on one set of batteries and I prefer to not change them while it is freezing out ( hands numb and plastic brittle ), plus a rechargeable battery drains daily while not in use.  Both kinds are a bit of a toss-up on preference.  Once up, I quickly jump into my clothes I’ve set out the night before, stacked in order of which I put them on.  It is friggin cold in the trailer, and even most times in The Pit.  I never run the heat at night, having plenty of wool blankets and a comforter ( I’ll cover that last, in the evening section ).  Since it is usually cold I don’t shower or shave in the morning but in the afternoon.  Don’t worry, the cold will wake you up.

*

Once up and quickly covered in your daily wear cotton clothes with a covering of wool, you are just as warm as when under the covers.  A quick splash of water to your face, and a dash of mouthwash then brushing your teeth and you are ready to head to work ( there is no running water, just gravity hand held jugs.  I keep a twenty ounce soda bottle by the bathroom sink, with a hole in the cap.  Squeeze to wet the brush, washcloth, rinse the sink.  Once you see how water is hauled, you’ll understand the minimized use ).  After warming up the bicycle on cold mornings, it’s off you go to work, LED flashers merrily winking.  Out in the country, I never had the need for a bike headlamp to see.  The stars were enough.  I did have the lamp for safety so vehicles could see me far off, but I just used that as needed on the stretches I had to share the narrow road.  When I first moved out there was zero traffic.  Once all the asshat neighbors started crowding me in the road got dangerous and I slowly added more flashers, brighter flashers, a headlamp LED and a safety reflector vest ( the vest was right after I almost got run over, probably the silly bitch was on her cell phone ).  Overnight, the city going from 16k population to 20k, the roads went from deserted except half hour rushes morning and afternoon to 24/7 idiot drivers.  Oh how I shall glory in their economic demise.

*

Once at work I used their power to cook my breakfast ( the nuke bread-waffle batter of whole wheat flour and water, no yeast or leavening, microwave three minutes each side.  Tastes like crap, easy with minimal clean up.  The improved recipe is one half water to wheat, spread out the nearly dry batter, one minute each side, allow to cool completely.  Tastes much better, but with a lot more clean up as the dough sticks and cooks on, having less moisture ).  Cooking wheat with propane is wasteful as it takes some time, so I minimized cooking at home to the weekends.  Nowadays I’d try for a solar powered microwave off grid, plus I now know how to make my own real solar oven, cheap ( it is insane what the commercial units sell for, for flimsy ovens.  With our winds, that is silly ).  But then I was working and since I was busting my ass for minimum wage I figured they owed me free electricity and coffee.  For my region, I have found that if I use a total daily watt count equal to one hours solar generation I never run out of power, never drain my battery, regardless of how many cloudy days I have.  If I wanted to cook breakfast and lunch microwave bread I would only need six minutes in the oven, or 100 watts.  So I could easily get by with one additional 100 watt panel for $100.  If I wanted to additionally pre-heat water, I’d add another panel to that.  Considering the propane you’d save, that would pay for itself quickly.  At the time, though, watts were expensive.

*

Which is why I wrote at work.  Generally I left my laptop computer locked up at work and wrote on my lunch hour.  This kept me from using any power at home.  I did this from about 2006 ( I was writing at my lunch hour prior to going off grid in 2008 ) to about 2013 when my hours were cut from full time.  After that I added another panel to account for writing off grid.  See, I spend money on you people-it isn’t just one way.  I don’t even want to add up the cost of my hundreds of reference/research books ( although I must admit, I’d have bought the books anyway ).  I’d write after work and on the weekends then, drawing directly from the panels rather than the battery.  I did try hauling my laptop back and forth charging that at work, but after one long book I wrote in addition to the blog, the computer battery took a crap and as luck would have it at the time they were outrageously expensive.  I can’t recall the reason for that offhand.

*

Now, after work I filled up my bottles ( Minute Made juice gallons last forever prior to getting pinhole leaks.  Or use two liter pop bottles if really poor ) for water.  All my water was hauled by bike once I retired the truck, which I had used once a week to go into town.  Gas was $4 a gallon and I was getting 4 to 5 mpg.  We did laundry, hauled trash and water, went shopping.  Once the truck became too expensive to fix I invested in bike racks and hauled everything for a year on that bike, five gallon propane tanks included ( cover with a cloth bag or motorists drive like idiots swerving to avoid driving too close, thinking the thing will explode ), before the budget improved enough to rent a car once a month when we went grocery and propane shopping.  At the time, even after needing to purchase insurance, AND an additional 20% city tax, a rental car was still reasonable at about $60.  Now, double that.  I never want to rent another one if I can help it.  But at the time the now ex-wife was stuck out there all month, getting cabin fever, so I felt I needed to get her into town with a gambling budget ( I can’t see how anyone wastes their money on the casinos, but she loved it.  Luckily for the economy, so do a lot of other suckers ).

*

Everyone loves bicycle trailers, but that doesn’t include me.  If you attach one you have to push the bike up hills, and on our two and a half miles of dirt road the ruts would just make another set of wheels wear out yearly.  I chose to install racks for baskets.  Find a rack that is rated for fifty pounds.  I never exceeded about 35, so there was a safety margin.  This is another reason to ride a single speed bike.  The Cruisers are standard 26 inch wheels, simple to repair and easily install a front basket ( on a mountain bike the gear and brake cables get in the way, although you can do it ).  The front was a wire basket holding two gallons, and the rear was a rack I attached a milk crate to, holding four gallons.  Go to your ranch store and buy the heavy duty zip ties, rated at like 30 below and 120.  The cheap crap at Wally will snap in normal winter cold.  A pack of 100 for $20 is a great investment, for the bike racks and other things ( I supplemented metal fasteners with these zip ties to hold up my roof top TV antenna and they lash the pole to the awning arm of the RV, and the antenna to the pole, and withstand fierce winds, solar and freezing ).

*

With my racks I hauled five gallons of water a day home, twenty to twenty five gallons a week, and that was drinking and bathing and dish water and coffee for the week for two people.  If I did it now, only going into town two or three times a week since now happily self employed ( thank you minions! ), I would be single and it would still be sufficient for my needs ( I’ll either move back if the NOL passes away or if the ass falls out of civilization.  In the first case, I’m single again.  In the second, I won’t be going into town but hauling from the river one mile away ).  The racks also were sufficient for all grocery shopping.  About every two weeks I kept the cupboards topped off with a trip to Kroger ( Wal-Mart, NEVER the low price leader ) to get the bulk and heavy items such as rice and potatoes and pasta, flour and chips if on sale and it all fit in the racks and hanging from plastic bags tied to the racks.  Was it a pain in the ass?  Of course.  But that is what off grid living is, trading a lot of PITA moments for few moments costing money.  I cover perishables and so much more as we continue tomorrow.
