Many of them in Caribbean were captives sent there as a result of Oliver Cromwell's attacks in Ireland and the expansion of 'The Pale'.

I can't comment if those Irish in N. America came from Cromwell's 'pacification' program. I'm thinking probably NOT. The Tidewater region still had plenty of white indentures plus, most importantly, the people of that region were opposed to Cromewll and the Parlimentarian religious nuts. The Tidewater was colonized by the 2nd and 3rd sons of low level aristocrats & gentry, mainly from England's West Country. That class was firmly Royalists and I cant imagine them lending any support to Cromwell by taking in Irish captives in any appreciable numbers.

But back to Caribbean Irish....they hung on an remained a separate and pretty identifiable subset within Barbados, Jamaica etc for almost two hundred years. They were called "redlegs". Pretty much the dregs of island life (kinda like their same named brethern in Army artillery units 😉).

Finally they were genetically overwhelmed by the African majority. But their presence lingers on in the high rate of redheaded & freckled blacks in Jamaica. The famous "high yellow gals".Anon()()noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2686829448547770092.post-57514896410121540932020-04-13T06:13:53.789-07:002020-04-13T06:13:53.789-07:00I did read the history of sugar ( "sweetness ...I did read the history of sugar ( "sweetness and power" ) and it was fascinating. The history of white slaves by LeFond, not as much. He is trying to prove his case rather than making the story interesting. He was talking about in one year there were a total of 5k blacks to the states, but one state alone ( Virginia ) had 20k Irish. His claim is that "servant" was a euphemism for slave ( in that there were few rights and they could be literally worked and malnourished to death before the end of the seven years, AND being homeless and penniless after your term could get you convicted for yet another term ). I think he's on to something, but don't buy into his premise completely. And I'm finding nothing on militias or bondsmen and escaping slaves. But at least the research area is new and exiting. Not sure how I was off on my math. Not 250 years of colonies prior to Revolution, but 150. And the majority of blacks in the last fifty, early 18th century, if he is right. He wasn't saying no Blacks as much as almost none. Blacks were more profitable as they were lifers, and they could breed replacements. But they didn't dominate slavery until Whites were no longer as profitable. The men (Cavaliers) who supported him during his French exile during the Civil War had to be paid back. They had plans to turn English possessions in Caribbean into corporate sugar plantations.
Sugar was the cocaine of 17th C.
Charles signed off on new land grants & taxing privileges to those 'proprieters'. Massive fortunes and complex international financing of shipping, slaves and processing equipment were negotiated and put in motion. Fascinaiting story actually.
Once that process started in Caribbean the spillover hit N. America too

I could yak your ear off about the implementation of African slavery into Barbados, the subsequent wholesale population transfer of white yeomanry from there to the Carolinas and my family's involvement in transshipment of some of the thousands of white yeoman to new homes in Virginia and especially S. Carolina.
Barbados went from an all white British yeoman settlement to a black slave plantation in about 30 years. Population replacement writ large.
In many respects the history of S. Carolina is the story of a Barbados bastard.
Anon()()noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2686829448547770092.post-91883373604828056192020-04-12T16:54:46.405-07:002020-04-12T16:54:46.405-07:00You are correct about "armed" I should ...You are correct about "armed" I should have said "authorized". I never thought the Indians were from a Kevin Costner movie :) People are people and all act the same. Whites here were the same as in Oz, shipped over as a punishment colony. The difference was that the resources here were much better than there, and the transportation costs better. Some others were indentured, but some crimes in England called for more than seven years here. LeFond claims it wasn't until reward prices dropped for Whites and increased for Blacks that White slavery was replaced by Black. I don't care about that, true or not. My interest is in the centuries prior to the Revolution, and the power structures. Number one, I want to find the origin of militias and hence the authorization to be armed, and two, to get more proof what a twat Washington was. Just because I have a bee in my bonnet over him. You are correct about the settlers being outnumbered. Too little militia. But don't remember the Indians populated more at sustainability levels and the Whites overpopulated. It wasn't just White disease. Hint: Jamestown 1609.

Next, first African slaves didn't take a century to arrive in Anglo America, they arrived in Virginia in 1619 near Jamestown.

Second, you state the "rich elite in this country armed the militia for the express purpose of having a free army". NO!
Trust me I've seen the "paperwork". Militia provided their own weapons and supplies. During 3rd Powhatan Indian war (1670s?) in Virginia Colony & Crownland of N. Carolina my ancestors supplied their own weapons plus had to put forth tobacco, corn, powder or specie (rare) as a 'tax' to pay other costs like bribing other Indian tribes. After Powhatans slaughtered over 300 English settlers and families across southern Tidewater the war was on.
Like I said I've seen facsimilies of the muster rolls and the war 'subscription' logs showing what & who put forth. The subscription was based on your owned land usually. No rich elite paid them or equipped them. At most Royal Governor might have provided some additional powder.
Of course, the derelict lower classes didn't enroll as they had nothing to contribute. Probably as often as not those types went along with the Indians on the hope of raiding and plundering their 'betters'. Dont get caught up in the notion that rigid race/class lines existed. Nor were the Indians some noble race. They were savage murdering, double dealing, treaty breaking mofos. Drug thugs in Detroit are a better class of people.

A similar scenario played out decades later in the 18th C during the Tuscarrowa (sp?) War. Local farmers and plantantion owners (I aint talking "Gone with the wind") did the mustering and Indian killing. The elites were bumbling fools.

Those settlers didn't have enough guns, powder and swords..Thank God for smallpox, measles, diptheria & influenza.
