The gutters collect leaves, even with no immediately overhanging trees. Dust and bird poop on the roofing material turns into sludge in the gutter. I come from the land where water piracy was created, and I learned from it, creative designer that I am. My off grid cabin, which I am building this summer, is going to have a concealed rainwater diversion system. It's a single slope low pitch roof with a 12" overhang and level return soffit. The solitary rain gutter will be made from 12" wide aluminum coil stock and will be hidden behind a 6" wood fascia board. The horizontal PVC pipe downspout will be hidden inside the level return soffit and the remaining PVC pipe downspout will be hidden inside the wall stud cavity and empty into a 200 gallon plastic cistern in the corner of the cabin. An inline carbon filter will clarify the water before it gets to the cistern and a solar/battery powered 12v pump will carry the water to the kitchen sink, toilet, and shower. I am debating using a compost toilet instead of conventional. When the goons come looking they will see nothing out of the ordinary unless they break out the ladder and climb up on the roof. When he is up at the top of the ladder it will wobble and the tyrant will take a nasty tumble and may succumb to his injuries by way of assistance of a garden hoe. ghostsnipernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2686829448547770092.post-45627436991599942152019-04-05T16:43:36.174-07:002019-04-05T16:43:36.174-07:00I contend the SHTF really stands for when the &quo...I contend the SHTF really stands for when the "sewage hits the floor", i.e., when toilets back up because of sewage treatment plants being shut down. The program is run entirely by the local PD & FD, and more than once I was told that if things go sideways in our town, the CERT people are a higher priority for assistance/ resupply than the mere citizens... And they're tied in tightly to the HAM radio folks, to have quick local intel. Plus getting to know the cops and the fire dept.guys on a first name basis has actually been helpful on occasion. Knowing the mayor and the city council people i figure cant hurt either. Dont get me wrong, none of the people are my FRIENDS, and I'm certainly no LEO bootlicker (as a punk rock-skateboarder kid in the 80s, I spent a lot of time running from the cops and dont really have any love for 'em as an institution, but I digress...) but Id much rather have them know me by sight, and consider me one of the "good guys" rather than a potential threat or another unknown townie. Even when you're stuck in a cess pit like CA, there are ways to stack the deck in your favor, at least a little bit. When it all comes crashing down, I wont be seen as just another liability by the local honchos and I know where all the caches are, the infrastructure, etc. Just trying to throw in a little strategy to the personal prepping of supplies, etc.jlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14662563822328082468noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2686829448547770092.post-25930917872166264412019-04-05T15:28:20.161-07:002019-04-05T15:28:20.161-07:00Does that mean, "pay attention or they'll...Does that mean, "pay attention or they'll screw you"? If a Minion is situated in a good enough locale, I would recommend they become involved up to the gadfly level in the local political entities as well as any ancilliary groups (church, benevolent groups, youth, etc) in the community or area. It would be better long term to have your own "camel's nose" in the tent to stop eventual 'stupidity uprisings', or have a head's up on things. Yeah, I am an introvert and hate people and groups even more, but necessity and all. It may have side benefits for networking, trade and barter, etc. Planning and prepping frugally up to the front edge of collapse is a half. The during and after is the other half or your half assed planning and half assed prepping things. I would posit that there is a threshold number of population in a townie or locale that will make a difference during collapsing(s) that is determinate of whether there is a cooperative or a continued and worsening adversarial government and systems. I'll spiff ball that about 5k to 7k is a maximum amount of population in a spread out town or the entire county to enable a 'closing loop' functional enclave but not too large of a poulation for the government proles, leo, and enablers to have shielding or have excessive enforcement empowerment. The low numbered areas are by default more exposed to citizen vs gov't. interactions and contacts by those dirtier, unsophisticated, rube, deplorable types instead of the within the faceless urban jungles. I use net intel to analyze areas for the population (demographics, voting, median income and ages and other data sets) that are clues to the area that along with on the ground recon and field analysis will allow the Minionite to at least be located or decamp to a "less worser area".
