ARSENAL AMMO AMOUNT 2
We left off yesterday with
my observation that if trained and experienced snipers take more than the mythical
one round to hit their target, you have a LOT less chance of hitting
yours. You’ll probably need far more
ammo than you think to hit anybody ( even if within ten yards in ambush mode,
you’ll probably still go through more than you think ) and at the same time you’ll
perhaps go through more firefights than you’d care to just because the enemy
can’t hit much either. For people able
to go grocery shopping every day, it is beyond comprehensible how they could
possibly need five years of food and as well if you’ve lived your whole life
watching Hollywood hero’s unerring aim you probably can’t appreciate how easy
it is to miss your target when it isn’t large and stationary. It isn’t your fault, it is one of those
seeing the forest for the trees type of situations. When one reality is constantly reinforced
your brain starts to view it as The One Truth rather than the BS it is. Self-educated and well read survivalists
still argue that the Oil Age can’t end.
They aren’t stupid, they just have had the opposite drummed into their
head subconsciously in many different ways tens of thousands of times.
*
Our brains are not the
mighty machines of legends. We are naked
apes that denude their environment to fuel a slightly more advanced monkey
brain and we are FAR from as smart as we think we are. It is easy to fool your brain. Don’t give yourself too much credit. Are you SURE it is a good idea to reinforce
the illusion of yourself as a mighty warrior able to slay the multitudes with
nary a glancing blow received in return?
It is your life your brain is messing with, which is kind of odd since
your brain kind of needs you ( well, perhaps not so odd, given the routine
actions of males when receiving just the thought of a females scent ). Assume you will be hit quickly, while at the
same time knowing you won’t hit the broad side of a barn. It will keep you far more cautious and
perhaps lead you to trying to aim better ( spray and pray is NOT aiming, it is
sacrificing a ram at the alter of Mammon to bribe that god into allowing your
aim to be true. The joke is on you of
course because he is a hungry ungrateful deity ).
*
Okay, let’s finally get
down to business. How many darn rounds
do you need? How many should be
stockpiled? Forget militia conflicts (
steal your resupply ) and concentrate on post-apocalypse. We’ve already covered the Forever Gun, with
ten thousand rounds being the ideal. A
sidearm isn’t all that difficult, either.
I’d estimate a good six to nine hundred rounds is all you’ll need. Here is my thought process. You can’t hit crap with a rifle. You can’t hit crap with a pistol,
either. But currently, with every gang
banging hood wannabe totting a high capacity 9 mm, the Tactical Tommy variety
virtually festooned with a warehouse worth of extra magazines, and pistol
fights at such immediate ranges, a semi-auto pistol conflict actually has some
small semblance of reality with Pray And Spray.
Sure, you hit maybe one out of twenty or whatever, but with all that
lead spraying around at five yards, your odds of hitting are far higher than
with a rifle.
*
Does this mean I favor
semi-auto’s for sidearms? No. I do not.
I’m not in love with the idea that you need a semi to survive the
immediate collapse. I much prefer hiding
and waiting out the large ammo expenditure, then emerging with my ammo
sippers. The ammo wasters who survive
probably won’t have the rounds left they need, and since they don’t aim all
that practice doesn’t make them all that much more dangerous. Of course, you ASSUME any opponent has enough
to expend a lot of ammunition at you, and act accordingly. So, you either have bad odds since so much
lead will come towards you, or you use your six rounds as suppressing fire to
run the heck away from the area. Keep
running, he just lost the advantage of close range. At most, you do that a hundred times and you
still haven’t run out. Of course, the
odds are against you surviving all those so you have way more than you
need. If a pistol is ONLY for
emergencies, you don’t need all that much ammunition. For revolvers, anyway. Again, this article is NOT for the Semi
Simians.
*
And for your thirty
caliber bolt action? Hundreds of
rounds? Thousands? Certainly NOT tens of thousands. That is probably too much even for
multi-generational. But hundreds? Okay,
the Enfield carrying Brits who used a fast bolt action and were trained
in volley fire only had a bandolier worth of ammo. Certainly they didn’t fire hundreds of rounds
in a battle while mobile. I’d image a
thirty round encounter isn’t going to be normal for you. You, after all, are not a soldier firing en
mass. You can fire sparingly, seeing as
how you’ll have no extra supply. But if
it takes ten rounds to kill an enemy, not far removed from German urban
snipers, a few hundred rounds won’t last all that long in the grand scheme of
things. And that brings us to your
velocity of conflict. Again, I’m
assuming you went to ground and avoided the immediate worst aspects of the
apocalyptic die-off ( if you didn‘t, most likely you are dead. Sorry, there are simply far too many people
on this planet. Without carbon fuels
none of us would be eating, cooking or surviving the winter. You will, in the midst of all this teeming
humanity, meet your end by disease or starvation or violence not even requiring
guns ). There will still be PLENTY of
conflict to come, not to worry. We
continue and conclude tomorrow.

In my many back country forays on LRRP missions into injun country...A successful mission was one in which I didn't use so much as one round. Guns make loud noises and disclose your exact location !
ReplyDeleteMy load out for an M14 was ten stripper clips plus a full magazine and two spare mags fully loaded. For the 1911 , it was thee loaded mags. No other extra.
Your train of thought runs true to reality Jim. If you must expend ammo on a regular basis , then likely you won't live long enough to use ten thousand rounds.
Caveot to that thought , life is long ( hopefully ) so therefore stack everything as deep , as what your pocketbook can handle in ammo.
After you fill your stash to the rafters in long term food , medicine and other life sustaining supplies !
At the same time , fill that mush bucket you call a brain. With the info required to produce from scratch , everything.
Cuz one day , you just might have to leave it all, behind.....
I recommend to everyone that you watch the YouTube stone age guy making everything from scratch with rock and wood. You'll quickly appreciate how you can do a lot with very low tech. It will motivate you to get a small library in paper on this stuff, as the ultimate back-up to all your supplies.
DeleteIn one book I read, the US in Vietnam parked snipers out on barges/boats in the middle of a river with night scopes. They would shoot at the unsuspecting on rivers edge as they travelled by. So about as easy of a wartime shot, with the selected shooters.
ReplyDeleteThe estimate is that 1 in 6 bullets fired caused a casualty (enemy out of action severely injured/dead).
Frederick the Great in the musket era said you needed to fire a mans weight in bullets to cause a casualty. We are more accurate now, but we also tend to run around or stay hidden. When I have been able to find statistics, the man's weight in bullets test still holds.
One of the biggest advantages to the defense not mentioned is that they can have their ammo in place and thus can have a much larger supply of it in place. So if attackers on foot are maxing out at 200 rounds, you probably want considerably more. Some sort of night vision (doesn't have to be military spec) and extra ammo are probably two of the largest advantages you can have in a skirmish type fight. Particularly where marginally trained (at best) folks are involved.
Just always keep in mind that firearms and ammo are resource hungry. Britain had to protect India for the nitrate deposits.

ReplyDeleteI've thought on earth bags and they are great for a long term dwelling. I can't see living long enough to bother. But it is an option I haven't completely discarded.
DeleteGreat idea, IF you have suitable soil and enough labor it can be very affordable from the research I have done. BUT if you have to add much to your soil, or if your time and labor is limited you might be better suited to other building solutions.
DeleteWith my dry stable soil I don't see much use. But, elsewhere...
