It is basically an insurance policy against the coming fiat currency collapse . Trade it in for what ever new currency is coming from the privately owned central banks .If you buy a role of silver dimes etc you better buy the equivalent of more pressing matters such as food / water / shelter etc. On a normal basis ,gold or silver SETS the price of fiat currency .Not the other way around. Don't feel bad about asking stupid questions. I do it all the time. First off, STOP! Do you have everything you need for prepping? Food, filters, guns, ammo, more food, shelter. Silver is the LAST thing you buy, when prepping. SERIOUSLY. The Kennedy's you have are 40% silver, about $2 and change right now. Call it about an ounce total. Not great, but more silver than most people have. It will do, for now, while you prep. Historically, grain is worth a lot more than it is selling for right now. THAT is the best return on your money right now. If I recall correctly, a tenth of an ounce silver is one days hard labor ( old timey dudes-pre industrial ). And food could be up to half your wages. So do the math on two pounds of wheat a day ( just to simplify ). Then go to who you are buying the coins and talk to him ( or, do it now, just to buy a single ounce, to wet your toe )telling him you want non-collectables. Coins just for the silver content. That is what I did, knowing knowing about it. Most coin guys are into it for the love of it, not just to make money. They should be passionate about it. They want your business. Like buying a car, you rely on their knowledge. For paying property tax, you sell it for legal tender, then pay the tax man. And don't be afraid to keep asking questions here. What good am I if I'm not imparting knowledge? If the answer is "As much as you can afford," can you suggest a beginning amount?

Where should you go to get it? I see ads on Fox Channel all of the time, and in some blogs. I can also use the references already provided here in the comments. I just want to make sure I don't just go to the Yellow Pages like I did when I needed a divorce lawyer....although the guy did a fair job and I bear him no grudge.

When you buy gold, I think Jim said something about getting coins. Is that true? I wouldn't want a bar of gold, even if I could afford one, because how do you break it up into smaller sizes besides melting it and recasting it.

How do you select the weight or grain amount of the gold and silver? For a rookie, I can see myself getting ripped off without some basic knowledge. I easily can buy silver coins if that is all that is necessary, but I don't know much about how I would use them, thus, the questions. (I met a prepper once when my house needed termite removal and he would go places and buy silver in garage sales, estate sales, etc., and then melt the stuff down. I never forgot that).

My plan would be to store it safely and not use it until COLLAPSE, then I would not know how to trade it. If I bought an ounce for $1,000, would it be worth that much or more when I need to use it? I read here and in a novel that the good guys used PM to go pay their property taxes, which is fine, but I don't know how agreement is reached regarding the exchange.

Too many questions, I know, so don't feel like you need to answer all of them. I'll take links to websites and do the work myself. Also, I just Googled "coin dealers near me." When my brother passed away he had some Kennedy half dollars that somehow got passed to me. Between the 8 coin set and my gold wedding ring, that's all that I got. 1964-1969, plus a Bicentennial Kennedy half-dollar.

Sorry for the length, Jim. So 74.05 + shipping isn't terrible.
I mentioned JM Bullion in my 8:10 comment and they charge 86.95 for 50 merc dimes. But if you purchase $99 or more shipping is free. Note that they sell the dimes in one dollar blocks (10 dimes), so their price box may look strange.

If you just want max oz for your money, 4 1oz coins would beat the dimes, but I understand desire for smaller units than an ounce. And mercury dimes might cost a bit more than more recent Roosevelt silver dimes. But having an older, unmistakable design that stands out from current coinage is a plus.

By the way, I am in NFM, next door to where you escaped from.
SAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2686829448547770092.post-6147824837981642422019-10-18T12:54:10.562-07:002019-10-18T12:54:10.562-07:00True enough. That is why the clammer for "only junk". I buy all mint coins, because I don't care. I don't want the thing to be simple to get rid of. But it also won't take long for folks to learn, after they must. Follow the other advice about those half dollars, in whatever amount you think you'll need for retail/barter ( not that I advise either ). I only got a couple of five ounce bars, for grins and giggles, but at the time it was $7 an ounce and the tips at the casino were rolling in. I wouldn't advise bars, if you think the price is going to explode. I'm happy to answer questions, but I look at a lot of things differently. To me, a coin in hand is never to be sold.
