why must it be black or white?

WHY MUST IT BE BLACK OR WHITE?
We are all guilty of it, myself included. We too easily fall into black or white arguments ( relax, censorship dudes, I'm not talking about race. Oh, and by the way, communism called and congratulated you on on abolishing the Bill Of Rights ). I ONLY talk about frugal preps, and you always counter with some Yuppie Scum argument that if you don't have the best you will die, immediately, at the first whiff of grape. Then, to really embarrass yourself, you automatically assume I'm advocating shopping only at the dumpster behind the dollar store.
*
We are forever having this conversation, you accusing me of killing off minions left and right by not calling for premier equipment, me telling you I call for MIDDLIN quality. For those of you Yankee Scum hiding under a rock, that means middle quality. Not too crappy, and not priced as a designer brand. A dollar pack of band-aids are worthless, the amount of glue unable to hold the bandage in place. The actual brand, Band-Aid, is priced at royalty ransom levels. You just test a few different brands, or even store brands ( some stores are more of a rip-off than others ) and get the cheapest with quality.
*
I'll be damned if I would ever buy an AR with a poly receiver ( for a unregistered home built, that is an acceptable trade off ), and especially not an upper polymer. The next step up in quality, aluminum parts, say, Anderson, still doesn't have a good enough reputation. Palmetto State is the next step up, the MIDDLIN quality. I see no reason to spend twice that, just for a brand name. Colt? Seriously? Hump Colt. How many kids did they put in the ground, with their crap manufacturing?
*
Then, if that foils their normal arguments, they move over to equating money spent with quality. For instance, freeze dried costs the most, it is the best food. I must have freeze dried! Freeze dried is CRAP! You lack a lot of fat, as that doesn't process well. You lack fiber. You lack taste, a lot of times. The only thing you don't lack are bragging rights and a whole bunch of extra salt. Am I saying freeze dried should be verbotten? Of course not. But that is where we usually see the assumption, the black and white argument.
*
A lot of folks argue that by gum and by golly, they deserve the best. And they can afford it. Which, honestly, I have grave doubts on both those points. SOME people? Sure. They are called outliers. They are not meant to represent the whole. You toss outliers, in your calculations, like an errant bullet while grouping. First, why do you deserve luxury, over other people? Have you birthed a genius? Have you cured cancer? No, you probably mean since you have extra money due to winning the Surplus Imperial Resources lottery, you are far more worthy of special consideration.
*
And if you start blathering about hard work, I will vomit blood on you. You don't know what hard work is-go help out a Mexican peasant grow enough corn for his family. I'm not some communist, intent on redistribution of wealth. I don't DISAGREE with the pre-Reagan tax rates penalizing excess wealth. If the taxes were 90%, and you can't make it on your five times your workers salary, perhaps you wouldn't buy so many hookers and blow. All I'm trying to point out is that you are not special, you don't necessarily work harder or smarter. You DID get lucky being born into this system when you did.
*
Yeah, I know, it STILL sounds like an Obammy speech. He wasn't entirely wrong, just mostly. But the way we've chosen to run our current system is to punish the poor, rather than the rich, to address income inequality. Do people UNJUSTLY covert your wealth? Of course they do. People are lazy and moronic. But Uber-Capitalism is so over the top in its inequality, rubbing it in poor people faces, that you will have blow back. That is just human nature. You can't stop it by dismissively labeling it as communism.
*
The previous system we had, which capped income to a large degree, did present a fairer choice to the poor. That might not seem fair to Richie Rich, but he was actually protected under that unfair system. Now? We WILL see another French Revolution here, and the rich will die, violently and WITHOUT their wealth. That is what unrestrained greed get you. So get off of your high horse about your “rights” to retain as much money as your grubby little heart desires. Libertarianism will never work, and the reason for that is biology. Which is never fair.
*
Am I envious of others wealth? That gets thrown in my face a lot, as I make fun of the unicorn cavalry armed with FLIR scopes ( minion visual-thanks dude! ). I could give two craps if your hobby is collecting soon to be worthless fiat currency. Why would I envy your sleepless nights as you toss and turn, trying to figure out how to protect “my's moola” from thieves ( inflation, home invaders, swindlers )? Or how to keep getting more, to replace what is lost? Worship your god Mammon, your false idol. I'll take a plain woman that loves me, over a bought and paid for whore that looks pretty. Enjoy that wealth she leaves you.
*
Next up we have the argument, well, I just don't go to Starbucks, so I can buy the best stuff. 'Cause not buying the best is stupid. Therefor, I'm smarter than you. Let's dissect THAT piece of offal. You are smarter than me, because you can identify the highest priced item? Really? That requires intelligence? You are not very smart dude. At all. You buy into the Peacock Feather paradigm. You think the appearance of wealth conveys unto you intelligence, worthiness and mate selection? Congratulations, you are the Alpha Male.
*
Of all the other Pussies That Buy Superiority. Yes, there will always be females swooning at your hollow chested weak chinned bald ass, because that pays. Me? I'm not impressed with your paycheck. Let me see how tough you are without money, if you want to show me who is better. Who would you rather have lead you? Hitler, who fought in a war and lived in poverty and was intelligent, or FDR who was born into money, was spoiled, bought and paid for, and was cunning and lawyer devious, without an original thought?
*
It isn't how much money you have, it is how well you manage what you have ( this does NOT apply to penis size, sorry guys. She'll tell you what you want to hear, but no matter how that worm wiggles, well...let's just say you ain't winning any prizes ). I can do more prepping on three thousand a year than a lot of people can on thirty. That is what frugal prepping is all about. Getting the most for your money, rather than spending more. Continued tomorrow.

  1. True. I utilize those flagging indicators, as descriptively described by Jim, to get a bead on the fakers, posers, and outlier unicorn cavalry wannabees. They, collectively and individually as a caste sect, are a danger factor to consider in your planning and preps. These types and groupings are more apt to be scatter assed under stress, and break and run, in the wrong directions as well. Literally and figuratively.

They are like 9 percenters and system proles that cannot function without higher guidance and a support structure team on an on call 800 customer service help my ass out life line.

They are the ones at the Love's truck stop travel center with the 60k truck and 40k trailer, posing as pioneers or redoubters with their family unit lard asses, puttering around in a crinkle cut version of the prepper's "survive and thrive" soap opera serial drama series. Jesus coughs up bullshit on it while having his gourmet popcorn at the clown show his ol' man errantly had started.

skip black or white, go gray man on your own path, the fork in the road may reveal another better trail to take if your actually really looking around you.

    2. Crinkle cut! I'm dyin' here!

I was reading Reddit, and someone on the r/homeless forum (or was it r/lostgeneration or r/aboringdystopia ?) and someone said that while those "stan" countries are repressive theocracies, at least if you're poor and live in the local shantytown, they don't come through with bulldozers and flatten the place and take everything you own including ID, family pictures, medicines, etc.

And this is where I realized: The ragheads are winning. The ragheads, the chicoms, and yes, even the Papists.

Our system is set up to keep everyone running their ass off on a treadmill as Protestant Work-Ethic believing Rugged Individualists(tm) and thus, you can't just be homeless and living in a tent or an old fridge box, you're either a yuppie scum running frantically to stay in one place or you're a Non-Person(tm).

All well and fine if, say, those who end up in fridge boxes are losers anyway. But the system has been cannibalizing first the marginal working class like Otto the bus driver, and Comic Book Store Guy, pretty soon Marge's two ugly sisters will lose their jobs with the DMV and be out on the street, then they'll come for the teachers and all the rest of the ex-middle-class.

At least in the 'stans, well, one of the pillars of Islam is charity. The Catholics actually read the New Testament once in a while and remember that Jesus was poor (the Protestants have him driving a solid-gold SUV, and he is the Jesus of the Crinkle-Cut set) and as for the chicoms, well, those communist ratbastards have Confucius as their guide as much as Lenin, and they'll at least come up with some work for you to do and a hovel to live in - while Right-Thinking Americans just bulldozed your hovel.

  2. The Minion that slips his chain and cuts cords as a eupemism, and goes the budgetary route that is ALSO an independance streak is the richer one for it.

Sensing by lizard brain receptacles that the collapse is nigh, he cancels out home owner's warranty plan and auto roadside assistance club memberships. (As examples, mental exercise it a bit) Money is saved for other preps, away from that automatic behavioral in grouping things that no worky come collapsey anyway. Fixes or solve problems on his own, without that bill envelope coming around, regularly.

    2. Flip flops? Never. Ever. My feets have to be solidly encased all day long. Nothing serious gets done in flips. What anon outlined has been SOP in my universe all of my life. Never had the luxury of a bottomless money factory and have always had to do the best with the least with few exceptions. I was just as stupid as everyone else in my yoot, maybe more so than some, but I have tried to learn from mistakes along the way and not repeat them. I don't require much so it is fairly routine to stay busy, make coin, buy good when I can and infrequently the rest of the time.

Probably the hardest sustained work I ever did was when I graduated from HS and worked in concrete construction on 8 story high rises on the beach in Naples Florida. Concrete is the heaviest shit there is and those 80 foot high buildings were 135 degrees in the noon sun. Worked like a slave for $4.50 an hour and spent all of it when the sun went down. Did that up until I couldn't stand it any more and quit and joined the army the next day. Probably the worst fuck up I ever committed.

  3. Funny how people that claim to have plenty of money are also in debt up to their necks. How are they going to cope if the bottom falls out and the bank comes knocking? That is how people lost everything during the Depression. The bank isn't going to lose. Sometimes less really is more. Mercedes Benz makes a really nice SUV, but you can work a Ford without worrying about every little dent.

If you ignore the whole Final Solution thing, life for the average German was pretty good, having emerged from the world Depression while FDR was doing his darndest to drag it out. Had Hitler attacked Russia first to get their oil and then went after France, there is a chance WW2 would not even have happened.

    3. People lost their money during early Depression because banks lacked depositor insurance. If the bank faced loan defaults then the other depositors lost all their deposits (a lá "It's a Wonderful Life"). Think bank runs.
Many hundreds if not thousands of banks permanently shuttered in early '30s.
I would not say it's so much that banks came "a knockin' " as it was the economic lubricant of fractional banking withdrew to the castle and raised the drawbridge. Credit liquidity dried up almost completely. We had a taste of taste in 2009.
One compelling reason for CCC & WPA projects was an attempt to restart the flow of money into local economies. Thinking was if remaining banks and industry stay behind their fortress walls and don't lend or hire then only recourse would be for FedGov to inject liquidity into system via public works. It probably averted Commie takeover in many parts of country. Urban industrial workers didn't have recourse to subsistence farming like rural counterparts. "The Daily Worker" newspaper was in many a home in industrial heartland.

    6. My g-father, skilled machinist for IH sometimes only worked only 2-3 days a week. His supervisor walked the street with a work list (as most employees lived close to factory). Men would cleanup, put on starched shirt and tie and wait on front porch to find out who and when they might work that week. Supervisor would come down the street, stop at front fence and tell a man if there was work for him. Supervisor was respectful and almost pained when there was no work. Bless him and his descendents.

Super was a younger man and co-ethnic but didn't play that card. He tried as hard as possible to ration out work assignments just to literally keep bread on families' tables. The men in different departments didn't begrudge someone from another part of factory working w/ them & getting in his 10 hrs. It truly was the difference between bread AND soup, or just soup for supper.
Work was 10 hrs/ day and half a day on Saturday, straight pay.

Their union went on strike in early '30s. Complete boycott and picket.
Care to guess one of main strike issues?
The men didn't want more pay, they didn't want guaranteed work.

Their strike was for showers and place to wash the sweat and grime off after 10 hrs working in an industrial setting. They wanted to wear clean clothes back home.
All took public buses/trolleys to & from work. They simply wanted to clean away their stench so as not to offend fellow riders.

      Simple human decency.

The Socialists Party helped organize and provide some strike funds, not much...but they showed up ('30s "Solidarity")

G-parents lived right next door to a different ethnic Catholic Church (my uncle went to school there). Back in the day the RCC was rabidly anti-Commie and denounced Socialists "agitation" from the pulpit.

On Sunday mornings, my g-father sat on his front porch, only an arm's reach from sidewalk and opened his copy of Daily Worker (with bright red, 3 inch front banner!) so his neighbors could see.
He wasn't a hot head or disagreeable but he got his point across. Parish was simultaneously having a scandal of young priest and nun....she fell pregnant and was sent away while young priest stayed (for a while). My grand parents really like the nun and were bitter over the injustice & cover-up of the priest's failings. (some things NEVER change, eh?)

To wrap up...Socialist Party was an opportune tool for working men to use to get others to recognize their humanity & to poke a finger in the eye of the comfortable.

The depth of attraction to SPUSA was shallow...the Commies and most of the men knew that. A temporary marriage of convenience.
The real benefits of union rolled in during WWII and they voted Democrat in return. The commies, at least in public, were a dead spent force.

Let's not forget most people can't even cover a $1000 emergency. Being out of debt is self insurance. Then all you need to do is sell enough apples to cover your property tax. In my case, that would be about 8 bucks a year. :)

  4. I sorta follow Prepper Princess, and got the video below last night in a recommendation. Admittedly, most of her videos are actually okay. But the one below is probably one of the better one’s that I’ve watched. I don’t think that this comes as a surprise to most here, but it did panic me slightly. In 2020, the cost of SS will exceed the funding of it, which means that we will be dipping into the reserve currency for it, which is estimated to run out in 2035. For me, this means that I will collect for 8 years before it runs out, and that’s if I apply early, at age 62 (And you’re damn right I’m going to, since reduced benefits are better than no benefits at all). Her 78% of all Americans living from paycheck to paycheck claim, startled me as well. Yes, I knew that it was high, but I really didn’t realize that it was quite that bad. I guess I’ll have to make the most of those 8 years, if in fact I’m able to, since no one can truly foretell the future…

And for anyone that thinks that the gov is going to be able to fix the problem; well, good luck with that. Not going to happen. Especially when we have some politicians promising loads of free shit, such as medi-care for all, including for illegals!

All that money funneled to the insurance companies was a bail out to the bankers. Still, ongoing. That jacked up medical for all of us, and killed Medicare quicker. Don't worry about SS, the Banker Bust ongoing now will be a much bigger worry. Princess Prepper has always seemed to be a Disaster Danielle to me. Little Big Picture grasp. N. African ecological destruction due to 7th cent Muslim invasion, not "Roman" grain production.
Arabian (& Yemeni) military conquests and their pastoralist culture neglected maintenance on critical viaduct and important irrigation infrastructure.
Overgrazing by Muslims and death or flight of knowledgeable Christian "technicians" caused desertification.
Before & after Western Empire fell the Byzantines controlled N. Africa as part of Empire split. Byzantium cont'd robust trade for centuries. No ecological disaster.

Arab mauraders brought destruction. They came as a military conquerors not as agricularists settlers.

The Roman "bad farming" schtick is just wrong.

    3. I tend to agree on the Roman collapse by food production issues. There were other inputs, such as lack of trade, military ineffectiveness, hyper-inflation. But at base, overpopulation and soil depletion. How much of an ecological disaster was European verses African isn't my wheelhouse. I just follow the broad strokes. Cassandra probably already jumped the shark, so arguing over details might be futile. I think he got enough right for Close Enough. I do NOT agree that talent and intelligence trump resources.
