because they hate you 1 of 2

BECAUSE THEY HATE YOU
*
note: a nice short article on the latest Hilary scandals.  Love the Star Wars reference:
http://www.oftwominds.com/blogoct16/Hillary-blast-points10-16.html
*
This is a hilarious and insightful article:

The article was a funny diatribe against a specific corporation, which we can all relate to.  Of course, to be fair to Heckler & Koch, ALL corporations really hate their customers even as they pretend to kiss their asses.  At least H&K comes right out and says that civilian pukes are not the customers they seek and so please do not even waste their time.  They love government military and paramilitary groups and civilian posers just queer up the works with their complaints and demands.  Of course the government entity you are working really hard in an obsequious manner to cultivate as a customer is also going to be whinny and demanding but at least there you see a payday of a few hundred million rather than a measly $795.99 which is before costs and import duties.  The authors discontent is almost like someone hating the fact that Hummer’s used to be military only with no civilian sales.  Hey, if their product is just military bling, why even bother to hate?

*

Okay, German products can be HUGELY overrated.  Their electric shaver broke during its first week and cut my face up nicely.  Their People’s Car’s never need oil changes because the gaskets always leak-just keep adding oil to the top as it drips down the bottom.  Not to mention their electrical systems also seem to be screwy, and that was way before the current “out of the factory floor, we stuffed so many Windows microchips into your car nothing works properly” standard.  I would never over spend for German firearms even if they were available.  I would be concerned I’d be getting American quality with over engineering to ensure something was always needing replacing.  I get the authors hate and discontent.  But of course remember that most corporations hate you.  I used to think Japan was the exception, and then I owned two Subaru’s that didn’t last a hundred thousand miles without major work.  Well, I had two wives that owned Subaru’s, so I blame both the spouses and those little Ninja Nipponese bastards.

*

All corporations hate their customers.  If they didn’t, their customers wouldn’t be the target of fraud.  And it isn’t just their CEO’s.  Sure, a CEO is a complete dumbass who wasn’t enough of a jock to get a physical education degree ( the only thing worse than Lesbian Basket Weaving degrees are those in PE and Business.  Those three are where the retards go to get their sheepskin.  I’m far more impressed with a small business owner that survived on the street than ANY business degree schmuck ), but they are also just as immoral if not worse than lawyers.  The entire economic structure of the country ( and, currently, most of the globe ) is corrupt, uneducated and worthless.  I love it when I’m reading book #456 about Gore Warming where we are told we must change our behavior to save the planet.  The same culture that invited nuclear Armageddon in exchange for profit has focused on raping the planet for even more money, and you think they are interested in stopping?

*

But, to the main point of the aforementioned article ( the specific company hatred is just a side note, for our purposes here ).  The author mentions our blind acceptance of certain firearms for a variety of reasons.  Here, he points to the HK marketing department ( but since his whole article is humorous and while heartfelt doesn’t seem to be deadly serious, we take that with tongue in cheek ) as the culprit, but alludes to the entire gun culture as far too cliquish and susceptible to the power of suggestion.   He vainly wishes that more folks would actually shoot the weapons they profess to love.  And I’m just as guilty as any.  Every time I read a novel with a fantasy of using an M60 machinegun to achieve tactical superiority, I nearly ruin another $50 e-book reader by throwing it across the room ( or, not as often, chucking a $15 paper book in a similar manner ).  I was assigned one of those belt fed Nazi inspired hunks of crap and had the misfortune of becoming intimate with it.  What a vile turd.  Even without ammo you could barely tote the gun and all its accessories ( 20% of my body weight ), which wouldn’t be so bad if the thing actually protected you and your squad ( or, in our case being rear echelon security, the prissy officer pukes we had to protect ) but it was forever jamming.  If you haven’t fired the M60 you are just playing off the “cool” factor you got while watching movies.

*

And yet, I then turn around and endorse the HK91 clones as an ideal survivalist rifle.  Have I ever fired one?  Yes.  Three rounds from a buddies gun.  Certainly not enough to evaluate its merits or lack thereof.  Some guns are easy to dismiss.  The Mosin-Nagant, lacking a gas bleed safety when ammunition was far less reliable than it is now and hence needing one, is the last rifle in the world you want in the future when age corroded or improvised chemical ammunition is going to be used.  The Slavic bastards that designed, approved and built the gun not only hated the peasant soldiers that would wield them, they obviously also hate you.  They want your face to be melted and/or missing vital pieces.  A lot of guns you should avoid just on general principle.  Like most of the American gun companies those management endorsed any import ban so as to capture more market share.  Nobody is going to miss the shoddy commie junk Chinese SKS, soft wood and soft metal leading to slam fires.  But we sure do miss the OPTION of owning one if that is all we can afford.

*

Or how about those companies that killed our servicemen ( and pretty soon our service-bitches, I’m sure )?  Such as Colt.  I’ll NEVER buy from those dingus suckers.  Screw them very much.  It is bad enough when you are drafted for no other reason than empire building ( hard to argue that Vietnam was ever going to benefit the peasant-citizens as they had no oil ), and the Army officers are office politic educated idiots completely lacking a pinch of common sense, and your political master from all the way back to Washington believe your only purpose in life is for you to be cannon fodder, then to add insult to injury you are given a rusted jammed piece of plastic crap from profit-at-the-price-of-any-quality-whatsoever-from-Colt as a rifle.

*

I might have rambled a bit too much.  This article is following the Beware Of Hyped Guns thread.  More tomorrow.

the forever gun book 9

THE FOREVER GUN BOOK 9

32 ACP

It seems like you will be facing an uphill battle to spend anything less than a thousand bucks on a Forever Gun with its ammunition.  Even the flintlock rifle is going to cost about that much.  Same with a percussion ( with the kit for making your own caps from aluminum cans and one penny each chemical drops ) to simplify the ignition system and make it weatherproof is still about that much ( $700 for a rifle kit, $300 for the percussion cap kit and 20k’s worth of cap chemicals which should equal the “forever” aspect of a flintlock ).  If you already own a Lee-Enfield, a Mosin-Nagant, a 30/30 or a 308, you have the additional option of going with a 32 ACP round by purchasing chamber adaptors.  You still spend the same, but most of the cost is in ammunition.  For the same price, smokeless rather than black powder.  Much quicker to reload along with the other benefits of modern arms.  You will spend about double for the reloading machines ( you need the conventional loading die so must go with the next step up from the Lee Loader ), and the brass is 17 cents, but you are still looking at $1k for the machines and mold, and ten thousand reloads ( as well as several of the chamber adaptors ).

*

I have no experience with adaptors.  At the time I became seriously interested in them, you couldn’t sell your first born for 32 ACP ammunition, any primers or powder ( which is a situation which can easily be repeated at any time-so never, ever, never procrastinate on prep items again.  Rice, eggs, antifreeze-anything can disappear from retail shelves instantly with our combination of JIT inventory, Malthusian reality and  centralized corporate controls.   All ammunition and components face political pressure, as well ).  But it is easy enough to buy a single adaptor and one box of ammunition and test out for yourself if the concept is valid.  $30-$45 is not an expensive experiment.  To get the 30/30 or 308 adaptor, you want to buy from the guy up in Alaska ( he used to sell a 7.62x39 in 303 adaptor but dropped that offering.  I imagine the commie steel ammo had too high of pressure and kept breaking the adaptor and he was losing money on it ), MCA Sports/Ace Bullet Company.

*

If you have the British or Russian bolt action, you can buy the adaptor through Sportsman’s Guide.  Those are $15 ( the Alaskan ones are $30 or so ).  Now, of course, not everyone has an extra grand lounging around waiting to be spent on more prepping gear.  Just as with the 9mm, you can buy lesser amounts at one time.  I don’t advise it, but nobody is going to accuse me of assuming my readers are filthy rich and can splurge of spending.  It may be a mistake to assume we have far more time than you need to prep before the end, but it is equally silly to assume it is all going to end tomorrow.  Don’t be a dumbass and sell your house, give up your job, max your credit cards and throw caution to the winds.  Just don’t listen to the experts blowing noxious gases out of their backside promising you we have twenty years before anything bad happens ( or, assuming this Depression will ever end ).  Try to set your expectations somewhere in the middle.  You’ll have tomorrow to prep, but also don’t assume you have next year to do the same.

*

If you never get all ten thousand reloads, it isn’t like you are guaranteed to automatically die from lack of preps.  All the supplies in the world are useless to you if you don’t do your part in not acting stupid.  So, More only helps if you help yourself.  A basement full of food shouldn’t be located in a major metro area.  If you can’t afford ten thousand reloads, set your sights lower.  I would recommend you wait until you can buy however much at one time, of course.  Do to the length of the last shortage of reloading supplies, and due to the upcoming elections ( I normally don’t listen to Fear Porn artists insisting our guns are just about to be confiscated-folks like the NRA make a lot of money doing that.  Obammy didn’t mess with our guns [ even if his cronies at the state level did ] for eight years.  On the other hand, Clinton has a history of actual gun control.  I’m not panicking, but neither am I not going to assume bad things ), I think it is a bad idea to start a arsenal and then stop, waiting until a future time.  There might never be a future to complete it.

*

I’m also a proponent of buying tangibles rather than having too much cash in savings.  Cash loses value, supplies on hand do not.  But that doesn’t mean you panic and buy unwisely, just to get rid of the cash ( and don’t take this to mean you need zero savings.  I’m saying TOO MUCH is bad.  You still need some for unemployment and sales ).  Save for a short time, see what is happening, then invest.  If you bought $500 in guns and then only had a few hundred rounds of ammo, then there was no more at all, you wasted your money.  Ammo is far more important than guns.  You can always find more guns, but ammo is a fixed commodity used rapidly and not to be replaced ( in the near future ).  Panicking isn’t necessarily bad.  Things are guaranteed to get a lot worse a lot quicker than most want to admit.  But you need to panic rationally, not blindly.  The idiots with a quarter million dollar McMansion and SUV, one paycheck from bankruptcy, those are ones who will panic blindly.  You are supposed to be a little better than that.

moral authority 3 of 3

MORAL AUTHORITY 3

Before we begin, and too many readers make the mistake that this is merely a senseless glorification of violence and that I am channeling my inner Nazi because I am worthless and weak and need to act vicariously through fantasy writing, a gentle reminder to remove your head from your ass.  Man is-remember?-a opportunistic predator.  He is-wait for it!-a hairy ape.  Violence is as natural to man as it is to members of the animal kingdom who are not busy trying to eat grass.  Where religion and philosophy and moralizing and all the application of lipsticks on pigs come in is to both justify violence and channel it.  The bible does not say “thou shall not kill” but rather it proclaims “not MURDER“.  The difference being that you can kill only those on the approved list.  Amish and other pacifist are the equivalent of grass eaters.  They are gazelle.  If you want to eat meat, you need to kill.  If you want to eat the neighbors kill, you kill the neighbor, take his wife for your own ( the age old question of how to avoid inbreeding and banjo playing, answered ) and sell his coneheads into slavery.  This is not because the ancients were unenlightened or uneducated.  It was what worked.

*

Any survivalist writer who tells you differently is going to kill you with his “advice” ( an unmentionable popular blog just posted an article about “prepping for the soul”.  You’ve done everything to prep from training to beans to band-aids, now you need to prep spiritually.  One dictate was to stop hating those who would harm you.  WHAT!!!????  If you need to initiate violence against others, hate is the first necessity.  I believe the article was penned by a woman, by the way ).  Violence is needed to avoid violence.  You don’t get left alone because you are poor or pathetic but because you will force an adversary to pay too high a price to covet your possessions ( those with almost nothing were still preyed upon.  The northeastern Nevadan Indians, the land having enough rainfall for grazing horses, loved to raid the Las Vegas area digger Indians.  They were poor but there were still women and children for slavery.  Keep in mind the raid was 400 miles through arid desert on horseback-so the journey was obviously justified.  Historically infantry moves fifteen miles a day and horse thirty, assuming combat effectiveness is maintained by this pace, so the Indians had a month round trip at a minimum ).

*

It irritates me I must waste time justifying the historical norm, and hence the future inevitability, of violence.  But I can also consul myself with the idea that the few of you who “get it” will inevitable be rewarded with survival when you apply it.  The Yuppie Scum Survivalists who stockpile chainsaws and propane tanks because they want to “survive and THRIVE” are retards.  If you want to thrive, you kick everybody’s ass around you and give them every reason to avoid you-except for trade- in the future.  Thriving isn’t about Oil Age luxuries, it is about security and the ability to eat regularly.  These are the retards you are going to be dealing with in your fight to prepare.  Nobody willingly wants to see what it will take to truly survive.  Ah, the good old days when survival was simple bomb shelter vacations.

*

Everybody surrounding you, your wife and children and friends and neighbors, they are ALL going to deny that violence is necessary and good.  They are stuck on defense only as the sanctioned violence.  You can’t change their minds.  You can ignore the wife, beat the kids, butt stroke the community leader who pleads for understanding and tolerance, but if your monkey pack doesn’t allow and reward violence you are handicapped and probably a dead man walking.  Time to take up another practice from our hunter/gatherer ancestors and move away and start your own tribe.  That doesn’t mean leaving everyone right now.  Hell, where would you go?  Did you know that there are almost fifty cities in the US with over a million people?  I was shocked at that statistic.  I know we are overpopulated, but…damn!

*

Just as your job keeps you in a overpopulated area, it is going to keep you imprisoned in our current toxic culture.  The only thing you can do, other than move to a more sparsely populated area to at least somewhat tilt the odds in your favor ( living in Reno with 100,000 people sucks, but not nearly as bad as living in 1.5+million Las Vegas ) is to prepare yourself mentally.  You need to “psyche yourself up” now and be ready to move your tribe before things get too bad.  I’m not exactly sure how successful you will be pre-forming your core tribal members.  Outside of criminal gangs, how can you test, both in prospective members AND yourself, the ability to employ violence?  Most guys still retain the ability to talk tough, but how do you know they can walk the walk?  You might be faced with the inevitability of accepting On The Job Training as the only way of telling.  Just try to acquire a soft target to begin with.  You don’t go from pussy woman-soft marshmallow men to Warrior Stud immediately.

*

The important thing is that you know you must be proactive rather than reactive.  You must divorce yourself from the anti-violence types, or at least purge them immediately.  It is probably best to begin fresh with folks of the proper attitude, a shortcut in Darwinian selection.  But purging and scaring the sheeple into conformity can work also if circumstances dictate.  The whole point is to create an environment where the social mores welcome violence.  You must give yourself, wholeheartedly and without reservation, the moral authority to employ violence without thought or hesitation ( and as usual, remember that there are ALWAYS two sets of behavior you abide by.  One for the group, who is treated humanely and properly and by a strict set of rules all must follow, and another for everyone else who are treated as mere cattle to be used ).  Violence is like fire, and must be controlled, but like fire it is a very good tool.

moral authority 2 of 3

MORAL AUTHORITY 2

What males have been denied lo these many generations since the insanity of BitchesLib reared its ugly head, permission to engage in violence, does not mean that males regular state in nature will ever be excised.  It merely means that we have too little practice at the application.  Most of you, getting long on tooth but not yet ready to fill your Depends while retired on a golf course, remember an idyllic childhood filled with exploration and roughhousing and the glorying in violence.  And that is pretty much where your violence phase stayed.  The women ( and their collared docile bitches ) did not take over the country all at once but in the great scheme of things they instituted changes pretty darn quick.  My childhood was brutally ( culturally speaking ) ended when I entered the already Politically Correct military of “bitches be equal” and “we need a quota of Negro’s and they aren’t expected to do much of anything”.

*

And it has been one thing after another, surrendering to the gals ever since.  I shan’t go over all too familiar ground.  But the bottom line is that while we can still own guns in most areas too sparsely populated to be controlled effectively ( even if they do outright own the public schools-so it is just a matter of time ) by the New Culture, all you are allowed to do is fondle and caress and dream about using them.  Your violence impulses are confined ( to that, and to electronic violence ).  Men by nature might be violent, but we do need to hone our skills.  One problem in today’s military is that after being monitored by Helicopter Mom for eighteen years, and while at school being punished for making finger guns or drawing stick figures exploding, the only violence practice is, at most, video games.  Not sufficient outside of being a drone operator ( and those are Air Force pukes anyway, which is a bit of a stretch to call a branch of the military ).

*

Okay, so you are going to be severely handicapped come the Die-Off, due to lack of training.  Running around with cammo and practicing squad movements is not what I am talking about.  Training in violence.  Training and conditioning.  And, almost as important, social approval to do so.  Males are naturally violent.  Given early social approval, then a lifetime of practice, produce warriors.  Semi-automatic plastic guns do not.  Most of us do not receive this training.  Here in Nevada, for instance, both parties in a fisticuffs altercation are charged.  This is pure laziness on the part of the government ( “we don’t know which one started it, just throw both in the can and we’ll sort it out later” ).  But much more importantly, it is the law enforcing the new cultural standard.  Violence, even good violence, must be punished.  To bitches and ho’s, ALL violence is bad.  Their little pea brains cannot add black and white to create gray.  Their little pea brains are incapable of much else, evidently.

*

Removing social stigma from violence can do wonders for your abilities.  Just having permission can exponentially increase performance.  When I was an MP, I never consciously thought about violent altercations, other than to wish for more of them.  I was never afraid-and by nature I am not an alpha male type.  I am more analytical than action orientated.  I’m not the world’s biggest pussy, but I prefer to avoid conflict if possible.  Usually by engaging in humor, but also by avoiding most people.  That is, while I am a civilian.  As an LEO, there was the surrounding culture of aggressiveness.  Not looking at starting fights, but of refusing to avoid conflict.  And it wasn’t because we had a sidearm strapped on.  Most situations you were not allowed to use it, of course.  No, it was because you were authorized to initiate violence.  That was all it took to transform me from mostly meek to someone unafraid of violence.  Think on that for a second.  Most of us, even in obvious cases of self defense ( a burglar in the house, in a state with a safe castle doctrine ), have to overcome the social stigma on violence.  I’m not saying none of us will shoot.  I’m saying that there will be a moments hesitation ( no matter how tough you talk, you are still an ape in a group where group dictates are far more important to you than life or death-the Monkey Mind is incapable of separating the Social Death from the Physical one, believe it or not ).

*

In case you were wondering, a moments hesitation in conflict can be deadly.  You are already under the handicap of lack of practice.  Not practice as in hand to hand combat, but practice in overcoming fear.  Of pushing through hesitation.  That training is critical, and sadly lacking.  So, the very last thing you need on top of lack of experience is to hesitate because of social conditioning.  Remember, you CAN’T decide to ignore group dictates.  That is how our Monkey Minds operate.  Just as teenage boys can’t stop thinking of sex ( nor girls, even if for different reasons ) and you can’t overcome stress by willpower alone ( but only through experience and training ), nor can you stop gravitating towards the most competent leader and willfully subjecting yourself to him ( males, not females-fems naturally gravitate to group consensus ), neither is it possible to alienate yourself from your tribe.  We are group animals, not lone wolves ( those that are have mental issues-the norm is desire for groups ).

*

Since you cannot avoid acting within the groups dictates, even at your own expense, you must change your group to one that allows and glorifies, nay demands, violent behavior.  THAT is what will give you the edge in combat.  It isn’t enough to have more ammunition, or to emulate an organization that requires cannon fodder ( any of you still having erect nipples and pulsing sphincters over the US military and its practices need to read up a bit on the history of class in this country.  Poor people, the lower class, where expected to die in battle.  And you can bet very few lower class are ever officers-at least not career ones ).  You must change your environment to one that allows your inner berserker to roam free.  More tomorrow.

moral authority 1 of 3

MORAL AUTHORITY

Despite what its apologists claim, the human brain isn’t exactly All That And A Bag Of Chips.  Oh, don’t get me wrong-for what it is and how it works, for such a small biologic machine, it performs wonders.  But it doesn’t add up to a lot of the hype surrounding it.  One of the worst offenders is science fiction that claims we can find out how to utilize the  “unused” 90% of our brain.  I actually love those kind of stories, but you need to know they are fantasy.  Just like faster than light spaceships or transporters.  All they are is Super Hero Comics in drag with a very thin veneer of science clocking it.  No, AquaMan, you can’t use your brain to command the fishes.  The “90% unused brain” myth is, in my humble opinion, something a guy that knows all there is to know yet doesn’t know he doesn’t know everything came up with a theory that has yet to be disproved because that endeavor of study has yet to advance ( possibly due to lack of easy Federal money.  One thinks the mating habits of Yellow Slime Slugs are better known than the mechanics of our brain because it was both easier [ look at his little yellow boner, dude, better record the time on that one! ] and requested by a superior grant writer  ) past what he knew.

*

For one thing, The Power Of Positive Thinking is pretty bogus.  It works, to a degree, certainly, but it can’t override stronger programming.  The brain is taught by negative input, not positive.  This has a clearly superior survival trait in that love and lounging in the sun and the happy thoughts they produce are just a bonus.  Getting screwed over by the ex and getting so sunburned you never go to the beach again are what dictates future behavior.  When you see a lion and your testicles retract and you run screaming to collect every other tribal dude with a spear, that helps you survive.  Looking at a lion in the distance and marveling at the joys of nature, that will not help you remain fearful enough in the future.  So, you see a friend torn into pieces, you fear lions forever more and go out of your way to hunt them down.  Survival trait.  Hey, sorry those lions gots to be massacred.  They brought it on themselves.  The film, “Born Free”, where we all got teary eyed and fell in love with nature?  Not only was it a disservice to little brown dudes in Africa, it was false advertising.  The lion they studied and filmed, all calm and jiggy with it, in the end turned and ate one of the cast ( or crew-someone that was a bit more important than a Red Shirt ).

*

Think about all the less than desired behavior you engage in, and try to think back to what firmed it in your brain to start with.  It is hard, isn’t it?  Most of how we act was taught to us by a traumatic event.  Mostly in your childhood.  And I don’t think it is any accident that both the age where your basic behavior is set in stone and the age you don’t remember much about prior to are both about the same.  There is a lot of trauma teaching you how to be sociably acceptable.  Your brain usually blacks out traumatic events.  You think any gal in her right mind would give birth again if everything was crystal clear?  Would a guy go back into combat?  Burying bad memories is good.  The only bad thing about it is that you can’t “re-program” yourself by identifying the issues that changed your behaviors.  Which I suppose is also a survival trait.  You aren’t given a choice whether you want to avoid certain behavior.

*

Although, to my imperfect memory, it does seem that the social behavior memories are a lot harder to dredge up than the physical.  When I am on the road, I am physically incapable of pedaling over nine miles an hour.  When I try, my heartbeat increases dramatically and I don’t think it is lack of cardio training.  It happened after an accident when I both almost got run over after a parts failure occurred while going at least 15mph and I flipped over the handlebars and  I also lost so much skin I went into mild shock ( once I ran to the sidewalk-thank you, adrenaline! ).  Yet, conversely, I can’t imagine where all my other social phobias and behaviors come from.  I don’t know what event aged me before my years, when I started both acting old ( such as stubborn adherence to schedules ) and started preferring older friends.  I understand what, in general, reinforced these behaviors, just not what started them.  Traumatic equals memory loss.

*

Now, this is actually going somewhere.  There are short circuits available.  When a social behavior is “beat into you”, you can overcome that behavior once the social stigma is removed.  Your brain got the message loud and clear, initially, that the tribe/family did NOT in any way care for your behavior ( mostly this involves pressure to conform ).  Whether your parent spanked you, or a school mate had the whole class gang up on you with taunts, you were traumatized and learned to avoid repeating the stigmatized action.  Your brain didn’t care that, for instance, the ant you were burning with a magnifying glass was suffering.  What you cared about was the insane disapproval your mom the animal lover showed you ( I know, I can’t imagine anyone cares about ants except for their role in aerating the soil, but that was the example that came to mind for whatever reason ).  If she changed her mind later and gave her blessing I’m sure you would be fine torturing the little bastards again.

*

Today in the Western world, violence is a social taboo.  Mostly this stems from FemiNazi bitches and ho lunatics  taking over the asylum.  Only the most insanely retarded ass- munches would think it was a good idea to replace your Stronger Warrior protecting the tribe with a fiercely scowling Girl Power 90 pound weakling.  That was, I imagine, the price of power.  First you get rid of all or at least most of the males in coveted financial fields and then you castrate those left in law enforcement and the military and politics ( I dare you to defend Obammy as anything other than feminine ) so that no one may usurp your power.  Moral Authority has been, largely, withdrawn from the application of violence.  Tomorrow, we’ll visit this situation as it pertains to the apocalypse.  You may fear you’ve been neutered, but that is far from the case.

the forever gun book 8

THE FOREVER GUN BOOK 8

9MM RELOADS

Before I cover the 32 or 38, which do away with semi-automatics and in one case don’t even require an additional firearm, I’m going to go over the 9mm.  Simply, it is wicked cheap due to its global popularity.  Additionally, it reloads much better, having a thicker case wall.  Here we have another classic AK verses AR or revolver verses semi.  Neither choice is ever perfect because each one has its good points and its bad.  To get one desired characteristic you must accept an undesirable one at the same time.  The AK is robust as hell, which is perfect for the apocalypse, yet its primary directive is to sling lead downrange-not to be accurate.  You need to preserve ammo once the factories close down.  The AR is accurate as can be, a midrange sniper rifle if you don’t gay it up making it a sub-machinegun.  Yet, it is a fragile wallflower and must be pampered-NOT what you want when your life is on the line in combat.  There are very few perfect combo guns, both robust and accurate ( the HK 91 and clones come close ).  And so it goes with pistols and their ammo.

*

The great thing about 9mm firearms is their affordability.  It shouldn’t be too much of an issue getting both a carbine ( taking pistol mags ) and a semi pistol for about $500 ( hi-point brand ).  The ammo is cheap-17 cents for steel cased, around a quarter a round in brass.  The bad thing is, they are semi-automatic.  I’m not sure if you can alter the gas feed on the carbine ( say, as you would an SKS ) and while I’ve been told they do sell 9mm revolvers I can’t imagine such a niche gun is very cheap.  Everyone seems to fall all over themselves assuring me that in the heat of combat they, being the superist studliest ninja warriors of all time, will be able to Jedi mind control their stress away and practice fire discipline.  Sure, good luck with that.  But aside from the semi issue, 9mm is really the best way to go.

*

I’m assuming you have a source of lead.  You can probably forget the tire shops.  Every store seems to have all their wheel weights already going to a reloader-if you don’t have a buddy working there, you can forget that ( and besides, they aren’t totally free.  You need to bribe the guy with occasional beer ).  Look at buying old batteries ( if you know how to safely salvage the lead from them ), or far better look for a metal recycling place.  Our local business sells lead-either pure or not ( no skimming of impurities, which you can easily accomplish yourself ).  If you don’t plan on casting your own bullets ( the Lee brand is $42 )( all prices in this book were taken from www.midwayusa.com in September/October 2016 ) you can forget about cheaply reloading.  It doubles your cost, from seven cents to 14.  Yes, I said seven cents.  You’ll remember that rimfire is a minimum of a dime each ( unless you engage in the not very recommended reloading of the 22 ).

*

You are buying supplies for 10,000 rounds.  You can do less and you probably won’t pay too much more per round.  I’m just under the assumption you wouldn’t buy a cheap pistol or carbine unless it was for a Forever Arsenal, and there is really no point in a Forever Arsenal without it being accompanied by too much less than ten thousand rounds of ammunition ( again, 10k is an arbitrary number.  You could feel comfortable with five thousand, or insist on a minimum of twenty.  I‘ve set it at ten thousand as it seems a nice large number that allows me to sleep better at night.  Always assume Murphy‘s Law-have more of everything, more than you‘ll ever think of needing ).  Primers are going to be three cents each.  Powder is even less at two to two and a half cents per round ( I assume a thousand rounds of reloads per pound of powder.  You can use less per round but I’d worry about diminishing wounding and action cycling issues ).

*

As for brass, I’m assuming ten reloads is not even close to too many.  This is using once fired brass which sells for seven cents.  Buying a thousand rounds should get you ten thousand reloads.  If you are buying unprimed factory new brass it is seventeen cents each.  If you feel comfortable taken new brass and reloading it twenty times ( I have no experience with this myself ) than the price difference is a mute point.  So, either way the brass costs a cent a round.  A three cent primer, a two cent charge of powder and a penny case run you six cents each.  Call lead one or two cents.  Seven cent 9mm verses ten cent rimfire.  For a better performing round.  Now, obviously, if you decide to reload rimfire and have found a cheap rifle, you can have that forever gun for a mere $300.  But if those reloads strike you as less than promising in reliability, let’s break down the 9mm Forever Gun.  A carbine and five thousand reloads is about $700.  Throw in the pistol for a $1,000 total.  Ten thousand reloads and both guns are $1,400 ( I‘ve ignored the magazine cost ).

*

There is the shotgun adaptor for the 9mm ( I can‘t vouch for its accuracy ).  Call it in the neighborhood of $100.  If you already own the shotgun, going with this option and the reloads runs you $800.  Now, there is the matter of the reloading equipment.  I recommend Lee brand, specifically the old timey Lee Loader.  Most people piss and bemoan the type, insisting it won’t reload fast enough.  I say, What?, you got a job you need to be to, after the apocalypse?  You aren’t supposed to be spaying and praying, so why do you need so much ammo so quick?  The loader is $28 and the bullet mold $42 for a total of $70.  I don’t know if I’d trust a single unit ( in the loader.  The bullet mold should be close to indestructible ).  I own two for my Enfield and only plan on loading around 3k rounds ( remember the saying, One Is None And Two Is One.  That is why you don’t only own one expensive gun, but two middlin price ones.  Why you have more than one grain grinder, etc. ).  On another note, I have ignored shipping costs.  I figure you about pay the same, either reloading components or rimfire, so it is a wash in comparing prices.

the forever gun book 7

THE FOREVER GUN BOOK 7

SALVAGE OPTION

The next chapter will cover the costs of 9mm reloads but here I’d like to take a short detour and cover another possibility.  It isn’t as secure as a large part will be scavenging/salvage ( always a risky business as you won’t be repeating some dubious plot line from a cheesy ‘80’s survivalist pulp series and be hopping and skipping down the road and lo and behold there, as if by magic, is an un-looted semi trailer truck full of guns and ammo.  Rather, you’ll most likely be killing your enemies for their ammunition and hence be in a lot more danger ), but if you are leery about relying on cheese dingus rounds of very anemic strength this might be just the ticket for you.  I’m not sure what you’d call this arsenal choice, and believe me that is strange as I simply adore my wit and rarely hesitate to invent more of my own labels.  Perhaps “spoils arsenal”.  You basically just arm yourselves with guns using a caliber in common with your projected enemy.  The trick is, rather than copying his expensive firearms you are just getting a cheap bolt action that fires his round.

*

Have you priced AK-47’s lately?  No longer very affordable.  It is my contention that in a very short period of time Californians bought up all the parts kits so they could have Tupperware style parties where flat pieces of sheet metal were hammered into receivers.  This was a legal way to own a real gun in that state, without paperwork ( just beware that no matter how good that sounds, anything you buy through the mail is recorded by the Feds-so a 1890’s surplus gun, a 80% receiver, a black powder revolver, a modern case insert for same, a flare gun or anything else you buy to “leave no paper trail” isn’t as stealthy as you believe it to be.  The only way is to live in a state that allows paper-less private sales, and for your sake I hope that gun was never owned by someone on a watch list.  If you ever need to use it… ).  As a result, no more parts kits were sold affordably.  Tried finding an SKS?  They have held their value.  In the 1990’s you could buy two Enfield’s for one SKS.  About the same today and that is three times the price.  Thanks Klinton Kunt.

*

You can, barely, buy an AR-15 for $500.  I wouldn’t trust them-there were reports of range injuries when substandard parts exploded.  I think I’d be comfortable with a $700 as bare bones and I’d prefer to spend $900 for a long heavy barrel to get a mid range sniper rifle ( the only way an AR is worth half a crap ).  That is not too much more than an AK goes for.  So there are your two firearms your enemy will possess.  FedGov jack booted thugs, and 90% of survivalists ( and, yes, Virginia, other survivalists are your enemy.  The morons bought thirty five different semi-automatic firearms, cases of ammo, and only six months of storage food.  Silly, I know, since you could have bought a $10 bag of flour and doubled the months supply of freeze dried foods, but few put Food First ) have the M-16/AR-15.  There are millions of those plastic poodle shooters out there, and about one months supply of ammunition as the standard, actually, only, tactic with them is to spray and pray.

*

You’d think that there wouldn’t be a whole lot of chance of salvaging ammo if all the practitioners plan on ejecting their entire supply of ammunition in one orgasmic display of righteously fearsome sound, but since you have a bolt gun ( or, for that matter, a break-open single shot ) you won’t need that much.  As far as a commie carbine round, the 7.62x39 ( while the Soviets went to a higher velocity round in ‘74, all their satellite countries were still churning out the original long after that.  The ’47 remains the most popular and widely available ), far less survivalists seem to have them, and the odds of the Chinese attacking seems remote.  Every year that passes, the cost of invasion increases as our natural resources are used up further.  Nonetheless, the AK is in a solid second place and having a bolt rifle for that round seems to make sense as the supply should be relatively plentiful ( don’t discount the probability of the Chinese NOT attacking, but supplying partisan groups.  In this case, the rounds supply will exceed the .223 after a short time ).

*

A third possibility is 308.  Personally I’ve always felt that the round was given too much fuss by survival writers.  I prefer any thirty caliber to carbine rounds, but I think far too many survivalists get visibly sexually aroused by the touch of AR plastic.  They won’t admit the thing is a turd compared to an HK or FN-FAL or other real gun.  So while the #1 recommendation of the writers, I’m dubious too many are out there.  But, assuming you want one and believe it worthwhile, you could in theory buy all three, the 223, the 7.62x39 and the 308 in bolt guns for barely more than the price of a single AR.  Then you can salvage different rounds from the battlefield.  This is no where near as good as having 10k rounds of 9mm, but it will keep you going far longer than a semi arsenal, plus when you hit someone with it they will react in a more satisfying way.  And, as a bonus, in the meantime you have the option of still buying half price ammo.

*

Steel cases for ammunition are not the best deal.  Reloading is better.  Sometimes.  If ammo components are scarce and prices high, steel cased compares favorably.  That is if you can even buy the reload supplies.  For a time, NOBODY had powder or primers.  Expect that to be repeated ( as soon as November 8th, I might imagine ).  The great thing about a bolt rather than an AR, when it comes to ammunition, is that more often than not the semi hates steel cases.  The bolt does not.  And you will likely run into steel case 223.  To me, with the last eight years of rolling retail shortages, it never makes sense to assume an item won’t disappear from shelves.  Steel cases just give you another option.  Sportsman’s Guide loves to have free shipping sales and you can buy steel cases as cheap there as anywhere else, usually.  Plus they treat their customers correctly.

*

The Spoils Arsenal gives you options.  That of course is higher quality rather than better quantity, but if it works for you it might be a solid option.
