vilifying victim 2

VILIFYING THE VICTIMS 2

Note: I'm going down to visit my folks, so I'll be out of touch Saturday through Monday.  I might get the comments first thing Saturday morning, perhaps late Monday, but I guarantee nothing.  My son is being shipped over to Afghanistan and this is my last change to visit him ( he will be there visiting the grandparents ) prior to that.  Here's hoping for a peaceful deployment.
*
The American Indians were the first Americans to be victimized under the pretext of being villains.  When Whites encroached on their lands and took something, the Indians fought back.  The casualties from that attack were used as justification for fighting back against the Indians and taking much more.  But the indigs have been cried over for generations now ( well, to be more accurate, there were tears shed, but nothing done to help them such as giving them back their good land ).  Time to move over to a much less understood victim.  Southerners.  Yankee owned propaganda vehicles paint them as villains.  Oh, evil slave owners ( even though very few southern Whites owned slaves, and even though New England companies got rich running slaves from Africa ), to even show a Confederate flag is to be a racist.   The FedGov was totally right to beshat the Constitution to end slavery ( did Lincoln forget the northern states wrote slavery into the Constitution? Reminds me of another lawyer defiling the document today ).  Yet, since the end of the war between the states, the northern states have occupied and colonized the South.  They are justifying their rapine.  How many Iraqis were killed so we could defend the PetroDollar?  Vilifying the victims, meaning those dirty raghead women haters deserved to die, even the children and women and old people.  Colonizing is always full of collateral damage ( you don’t think a significant number of civilians in the South didn’t die even after the war of famine and disease? ).

*

We debate why survivalists are villainized.  It is the favorite whipping boy of the media since the 80’s.  One guess is they are largely the smarter poor recognizing their future further victimization and preparing ( preppers are stupid rich trying to freeze their position and treasure.  Survivalists are smarter but poorer, as you can‘t worship Mammon if civilization collapse wipes out that deity ).  But regardless of reason ( to crush independence? To stymie rural outposts?  To corral the peasants into easier controlled urban centers ), remember the ultimate fate of the villainized.  They become victims.  As for males being villainized, remember the money racket that has produced.  Women have dibs on most future income to provide incentives for divorce, so evil males deserve to be left.  Women are deserving of leadership positions in the workplace due to lifetimes of household servitude, so more females are hired while fewer and fewer males are, leading to males “refusing” to provide for families which is yet another excuse for leaving them.  The poor are more actively being villainized, so you can certainly see the writing on the wall there.  They deserve to lose any public assistance, being cheats and lazy and incompetent.  The rich deserve welfare, since they work.  The poor do not.  Follow the money, yes?  Just more vilifying the victim.  Look behind every villain to see true victims.  Inner city Blacks, the Irish, Viet Cong, Ragheads, Huns, etc.

vilifying victim

VILIFYING THE VICTIMS

As old as warfare, in other words two minutes after man started using tools, the enemy was always the villain.  And the enemy was always dastardly, villainous, sub-human and impaled babies on sticks ( or bayonets, if they happened to be the Hun, evil Germans intent on depriving the other western powers of full spectrum dominance ).  You need to make the enemy so bad that your warriors feel no remorse in dispatching them.  This might seem like a crappy scheme governments employ to “trick” their soldiers, but it is merely mirroring what each individual does.  When you have someone that has something you want, you trick yourself into believing they are so evil they deserve to be deprived of the desired trinket.  If you are stealing from work, it is because “your boss is a giant dick” or the “corporation is employing slave labor overseas”.  If you cheat on your wife it is because “she is the worst bitch ever”.  If you screw over the ex in a divorce it is because “they deserve it”.  I call it Vilifying The Victim.   If they are bad, you are justified in getting revenge, so you aren’t doing anything wrong.  You are still a good person.  If you understand this is how peoples minds work, you won’t be taken by surprise in the future.  Because they are not screwing you, they are still Gods chosen ones.  If you think most people are good, it is because you are buying your own justifications.

*

When resources are scarce, others will try to steal yours.  Period.  End of story.  Guaranteed.  They don’t think they are stealing, of course.  They are decent, good, God fearing people.  But you did something wrong to earn their wrath and revenge.  Christian Militia types are looking at the world like no one wishes them harm, as all are of stout religious material.  Which is true.  In each persons mind, they are perfect.  How can anyone hate me?  And how can anyone do me wrong?  But don’t you see that we are programmed to steal with self justification?  It is a survival trait.  There are never enough resources.  Ever ( except for two hundred years with coal and petroleum, and even then we NEVER stopped acting as if there was not enough to go around, and continued to fight and kill for the surplus.  It is the only reason the last two world empires had so much wealth [ and to see how much, just look at how poor Britain is now after we took all her surplus-and we are one day too many from being the next England ] was because they cashed in on dinosaur juice as their exclusive prize ).  So two tribes battle for the resources.  There is one and a half villages worth of food, and two villages fight for it until one is left standing, and the victor has a surplus of half.  Next article, vilifying the victims: Southerners, Survivalists, males and the poor.

poor survival

POOR SURVIVAL

In the course of a civilization collapse, everyone who survives is poor.  Which is not to say that only the poor will survive.  Plenty of the poor will be some of the first casualties.  They already are, prior to the collapse even picking up much speed.  The poor have less money to buy their freedom, and end up in prison, or have no other choice but crime just to survive ( once that first drug charge puts you in jail, you have zero chance of employment in the conventional job market.  The drug dealers don’t necessarily pick their careers ).  While bullspit bloviators like Rush and Beck cheerlead the fracking bubble as centuries long energy independence ( to their dying day, blaming the Left for shutting it down to save endangered species ), they also take time out to blame the poor for being poor.  A noble past time in this and most societies, as the criminals who legitimize their theft transfer blame to the victims.  But here is a little secret for you.  The rich transfer all wealth from the poor, then each other and in the end the wealth is all destroyed some way or another.  A few might sail away to their Caribbean islands with gold bars, but 99% of the former rich are left dangling from lampposts or huddling under the same overpass as the rest of us.  To the poor, money is a tool.  To the rich, money is a status symbol.

*

When you are constricted in your ability to acquire a tool, you make do with less.  When you can never get enough status symbols, their acquisition consumes your life.  You risk money in hand to get more money ( the saying “a bird in hand beats two in the bush” is gibberish to them ).  Money blinds you, and makes you weak.  So you can forgive my mirth at the spectacle of survival writers/publishers all chasing more and more money by teaching that only more and more money will assure you survive.  The dollar is so close to the precipice, being rejected by more and more countries as oil trading chits, planning on how you will get more in the future is an archaic habit from the past.  Screw getting more dollars, focus on getting rid of the ones you have now.  You think Obammy doubling the deficit was bad?  If the PetroDollar goes off the rails during Hilary’s tenor, you get hyperinflation.  You think all your money grubbing schemes will be worth squat then?  Puny Earthling!  Your dollars are no match against my Martian ray gun ( sorry, couldn’t help the Bugs Bunny reference ).  The first step towards surviving without a valid functioning currency is to stop worshiping at the alter of Mammon.  Your mortgage on the concrete retreat full of AR’s will be as safe as the Dollar, your job and 401k.

more guns 2

MORE GUNS 2

Even if I didn’t want to go for the perfect rifle, the HK, there are still better options than my current choice of Lee-Enfields ( they are NEAR perfect, or were before their prices exploded, but if you plan your arsenal around ammo rather than guns, not so much ).  For those on a budget, the single shot break open rifles are nearly perfect for a survival budget.  For the price of a single AR or AK, you can get two or three single shots.  If you get one in 223, one in 762x39 and one in 308, you can eliminate most ammo problems.  You can buy on sale, or pilfer from the dead under most any collapse scenario.  Yet, I stick with the Enfields.  I have my beloved bayonets, and my beloved ergonomics and battlefield reliability, but suffer ammo supply and accuracy.  Not that the singles aren’t problem prone.  Every gun has trade-offs.  But the question is, why don’t I “trade up”?  I might not, now, currently, have the money, but I certainly did in the past many times.  So, what gives?  Simply, I think the preoccupation with the perfect survival gun is misleading and counterproductive.  By continuing to think about upgrading, you are buying into the view that you have time.  You buy into the Druid Dude worldview that cataclysms don’t happen overnight.  Not that I deny he has a certain point.  The odds are against an instant collapse.

*

Which is why I don’t condone debt.  You can’t count on the bankers going away so there is no collection.  Yet, the odds we are calculating are those using historic data, and we have never had an Industrial Age before since we never had petroleum to fuel one before.  The collapse will be similar, but different.  Different in that for the first time, we don’t have a decentralized organic agriculture infrastructure globally ( we had isolated areas dependent on imported food, or similar to today circumstances, but never on a global scale ).  Even as the rest of the globe carries on with less fuel, some areas are going to be in Dark Age circumstances.  At the very best, best case scenario, total economic collapse will be seen.  So either way, you have no industrial goods to trade for.  Preppers see limited brigandage and limited economic impact.  I see vast tracts of settlement triaged out of the global trading system, left to degenerate into the fabled 90% die-off.  For those areas, the end will be nigh.  Total collapse.  Why are you betting your area is immune?

*

Granted, no one is suggesting I get rid of my old arsenal to trade up, but rather to buy better and use the old to fall back on.  But the way I look at things, money will be going away soon, and I’m trying, now, to limit my need, desire or lust for it.  I’m trying to limit my wish for writing income ( a different article ), as well as my lust for upgrading to anything else such as location, dwelling, arsenal or whatever.  It is a mindset, and if I make exceptions, such as for an arsenal, even if they make sense, I lose the battle to acquire the mental outlook.  It takes exercise, not excuses.  Making do, doing without and improvising.

more guns

MORE GUNS

Before we start today, I just want to warn everyone that this will NOT be normal.  I won’t be doing a gun article every week.  If they happen in clusters it is only because I write one and a comment on that one inspires another.  I love guns, but  survivalists tend to go a little gay over them.  They are just tools, and most folks misrepresent them.  Food is far more important ( although you obviously need both ).  That said, let me share with you why I don’t upgrade my arsenal.  I do have the money, but money is also just a tool.  If I spend it on guns, I can’t have it for savings.  I hate savings, being subject to hyperinflation or outright government theft, but I still NEED it.  If you remember from previous discussions, I’ve already upgraded my arsenal a few times.  At first I had just a pistol, Springfield Armory 1911, being in the school of the “six months prepper, then recovery” delusion.  Then I went with the Lee-Enfields, but they were the No.1’s ( WWI rather than the next wars N0.4’s ).  Better bayonet but really crappy sites.  Then I added a few Chinese SKS’s.  I got rid of all of those, then went with Smelly No. 4’s and the cheap South American 45’s.  I got rid of the autos and went to a revolver.  Then, I later added to the No. 4’s while they were still affordable, plus got a great rimfire arsenal with enough ammo.  The last time I bought a gun was about 2005 or thereabouts.  So, almost twenty years of getting the arsenal right, then ten years fighting the temptation to do it all over again.

*

Clearly, my arsenal is not yet perfect.  The perfect survival rifle is still the HK-91 ( clones, now ).  I don’t think one needs a carbine.  They are Industrial Age warfare and while I’m about 50/50 deciding whether the future will be total Dark Age no infrastructure or another lifetime of Chinese dominance allowing Commie Carbine ammo re-supply, either way feeding a carbine is going to be problematic.  Shotguns have their place, but in a limited role.  I would forget about rimfire, as the ammo will never be affordable again.  Pistols, I feel comfortable with and like, but see more open warfare than clandestine militia revolution, so the expense to most po folk might not be justified.  If you live in an area you need a pistol now, you need to move, not get a CCP and a high-cap wonder plastic pistol.  If you think you need it soon, just think about how easy it is going to be for a rifle wielder to acquire a pistol.  But not the other way around ( yes, I know, sneak up to a soldier and cap him and get a pistol.  I’d be too nervous.  I like the idea of bushwhacking from afar ).  You need a rifle first, not a rimfire, because of the ammo.  Not a pistol, due to limited utility.  Not a shotgun, due to its limitations.

suadis and chinese

SAUDIS AND CHINESE

I hope you all make a habit of reading "The Golden Jackass" website. There is a public section as well as the paid one for subscribers. The public piece on May 5th, a rambling tirade in honor of celebrating our communist CIC ( tongue in cheek ), at one point alluded to the Saudi royals and their part in the current low prices for oil. In short, the Saudi’s are flooding the markets, in cooperation with the Chinese, to kill our fracking oil industry. With the goal, one assumes, of knocking the US economy’s dingus in the dirt. That is all the Jackass said about it, but I’ll say much more because this intrigues me. Now, when I had earlier read said website, he was all in on the theory the Saudi’s were behind the oil flood. That was all he had mentioned. I didn’t buy into it, in that case. But get the Chinese involved and suddenly you have much more excitement and geopolitical razzle dazzle than simply a country losing money now to make more later. That just didn’t make sense, as "market share" isn’t a very good reason to bite the hand of your military protector. But if the Chinese are going to be the new protector, and they ask for a favor, then things start to become much clearer.

*

Now, your average politician, Joe Blow on the street, most of my readers and economists alike all have a very difficult time comprehending that oil is not exactly a renewable resource ( I love you guys, but you really should be a bit more concerned with resource drawdown ). But I assure you, the Saudi’s, those making decisions that keep them in power and safe from the rabble, all know exactly how much oil they can expect to have left on a daily basis. They can’t operate under delusions, as it will be their necks being stretched by a rope tied to a lamppost. They wouldn’t be fiddle humping around with trying to gain market share, in the process pissing off their muscle, when not only is the competition only a piddling one million barrels a day, it is also shot lived ( 2016 was the projected date of steep industry wide decline, and easily calculated with published production numbers ). Remember, over pumping leads to long term well damage ( less available ). If I were a Saudi, and I knew my production was already dropping every year, and a nice Chinese gentleman asked me to sacrifice a bit of production in the future in exchange for their more realistic ability to protect the royal family ( the US has already dropped that ball, and is economically double dog dry dicked to boot ), I would most naturally agree to the deal. It isn’t even really a sacrifice, as oil is going to go sky high anyway, so less oil still brings in MORE revenue. In a more stable currency. For a better military protector. A win-win for everyone. The Chinese get to see a possible death deal to our economy, plus assure more oil supply, the Saudi’s get to stay in power. If they see the death of the fracking industry as that beneficial, should we perhaps be giving it more attention ourselves?

9k year weather

9K YEAR WEATHER

In years past, when there was a severe weather event ( which, obviously, was every year on a global scale-or in Texas ), our beady eyed little monopolists just shifted grain surpluses in one region to another to cover the resulting crop shortages. Well, then something really bad happened. All those ungrateful bastards we had saved from previous potential famines had babies and world population got way too large when the next wave of weather failures went global. Too many years in a row, too many of the globes grain regions had weather related fails all at the same time. Now add in the economic problems ushered in by petroleum becoming a much more expensive energy source ( remember, Peak Oil wasn’t about immediately running out as I and a few others screamed about in morbid fear, but was about Peak Cheap Oil which was what our global economy is built around ) so that too many farmers are getting triaged out of the system ( Indian farmers in once lush areas needing too much money to drill wells down too far are failing. Afghanistan farmers planting poppies rather than wheat due to drought. Etcetera ). This is a triple whammy impacting food world wide ( the ethanol program here was just poison frosting on a crap cake ).

*

Now, we all know the economics are going to get worse. The central banks traded growth from oil production, which ended ten years ago, to growth in derivatives for their continued survival and profit. Which can’t continue indefinitely. And drought is here to stay. You might get alternate years of flooding, but that is almost as bad. Population growth is only slowing. All the Happy Talk crowd is pointing to this fact as if Malthusian concerns are unfounded. But growth is still growth, only allowing the can to be kicked down the road a bit further. Now there are further rumors of more bad news to add to all the following. Just rumors, but I’ve read of some scientists concerned over the current lack of sunspot activity tied to increased volcanism and earthquakes, and how this is the worst recorded in nine thousand years. If a valid concern ( as opposed to just a short lived blip that will right itself and become a false alarm ) this just adds a lot of fuel to the weather fire already established. Who needs more crap in the atmosphere due to volcanic eruptions? Or, more so, increased odds of a nearby "dormant" hill exploding or at least melting enough snow and ice to bury your burg under tons of mud. Plus, don’t discount the economic aspect. When Katrina hit New Orleans, and remember this was just after the economy started showing signs of weakening, years and years on we still have sodden piles of bulldozed homes sitting in corners of the ghetto, right next to a repaired professional sports complex ( money to fix the few areas outsiders spend money on, none to give to residents ). If an earthquake hits your town, expect little to no money available from either the insurance company or the government. But mostly, I’d be very concerned about global weather, and the global food supply, to get much more precarious. Got food stores?

really retail wreck?

REALLY RETAIL WRECK?
Recently ( remember, I’m usually writing at least a week ahead of publication so once you read this it will be two or three weeks ago ) there appeared an article in the doom and gloom sphere stating that the retail sector was closing six thousand stores and obviously this meant we were all going to die. Or at least have an economic collapse. Or, at least have less places to shop. Or, at the minimum, it was about how economic collapse bloggers are really running out of articles to write. Once you reread the article, it is hard to see how this was any different than one from ten or even twenty years ago. I mean, for Christ’s sake, the tired and soggy crap about online verses brick stores was even trotted out again. One corporation was closing three hundred stores. Oh My! Oh, wait, that is for the next eight years. Oh, Yawn! And if you take out the one corporation which is closing for other reasons than the economic collapse, your list of six thousand is now only four thousand. Sorry, but I have little reason to believe that Radio Shack closing is a sign of economic collapse. It is a sign that for decades now few people are in need of much in the way of electronic parts, and that RS was one of the many who simply overbuilt and that after they got rid of their "over paid" help that was versed in the actual product they were selling ( you want a box of nails that is 20% cheaper, you go to Home Despot. You want a guy who knows how to build and repair, you go to Ace Hardware. The extra cost pays for itself from the advice. Radio Shack USED to be that way ) and went to selling cell phones and computers at too high of a mark-up there was little reason for the stores to exist.

*

Why do I get the feeling I’m reading one of the yellow journalism newspapers from the 1890’s, the ones pimping American overseas colonies by screaming for blood vengeance after a boiler explosion in a visiting naval vessel, after I get done reading some of these economic collapse Internet publications? Every slight indicator is a sure sign of catastrophic imminent doom, every reversal of fortune proof positive that your 401k is going to be frozen by the bank needing to cover failing derivative bets and your only safety lies in buying a $30 "book" on how to stock freeze dried foods and plant tomatoes? Yes, obviously, our economy is failing. Yes, obviously, you need storage food and the means to protect it. And, sure, it would be nice if you could believe all that free info on the Net about survival preps but you can’t so perhaps spending cash money to get good info isn’t a bad deal. But all we have here is just another hack trying to generate enough income from too many advertisements on a website churning out "boy who cried wolf" information that does more harm than good by cluttering up the "net waves" with useless information. And you are supposed to trust his books? I can understand wanting to get paid for writing. I can understand it is difficult to get enough money to pay the mortgage on the concrete bunker atop a mountain in Idaho. Land ain’t cheap there ( at least as far as cash on the barrelhead ). And I can certainly understand slow news days leading to only marginally useful blog articles. But can’t we have some minimal standards here?

9 years of nothing

NINE YEARS OF NOTHING

This morning I’m at work at my usual hour plus early, slurping coffee and cursing all of the gods as the clock-in hour approaches, and whining like a little bitch as the Internet connection is down again (Hughes seems to be as crappy as the local jagoffs Frontier ) and I can’t get my fix. I usually have my Kindle with me for just such occasions, but felt I should be trying to get a little writing done. So I’m scratching my head in befuddlement ( all my notes on possible articles are at the house with my other computer-yes, I spend too much on computers, my writing more important than survival gear. I just dropped $300 on an electronic toy that could have gone to a new single shot rifle. I don’t know if that makes me generous or idiotic ) about a subject matter and in desperation I started to skim through the book on Peak Oil I wrote nine years ago. Surprisingly, besides a few words on the fracking industry I could add now, it is pretty topical. Not much has changed. History seems to be in a decade repeat loop. Well, besides the fracking I could add in the tar sands and ethanol fiascos, but those are just mere details. The book isn’t really dated at all. Overall the big picture still stands ( the book was in the "Chicken Little Magazine #1" still available as a free file from Lulu.com ).

Which worries me a bit. I’m not worried about being seen as overly paranoid. Actually, the book was written in the same style as my first one, The Frugal Survivalist- no ranting, calm and rational ( so, alas, boring ). No, I’m concerned that some damn fool will read it, look at today’s state of the world, compare the two, then conclude that since the can was kicked down the road for a decade, there is no reason it won’t happen again and they should start buying retreats with thirty year mortgages and start a saving plan for purchasing semi-auto firearms. I can scream until I’m blue in the face that survivalists should look to their grandfathers who feared a nuclear war at any second and got prepared before one could happen ( "better two years too early than two minutes too late" ) as inspiration, but most will look at the last ten years as an excuse to keep humping around and do nothing of consequence preparation wise. They will still live in large metro areas, still only have three months of food stocked and still spend 90% of their prep budget on AR accessories. Frankly, your prep plans should already be completed, with all your energy devoted to maintaining what you have already. NOT still acquiring. Every time you use the phrase "I’ve got time to do X, and I’ll get around to Y", you are tempting the Fates who might just take away that time to spite you. Not that the SHTF overnight, but that you lose your job and start that phase early. Unemployment is just as destructive to prepping for the collapse as an overnight EMP attack.
